Telikom picks Huawei for national broadband network rollout

Papua New Guinea operator Telikom has selected Huawei to roll out a national broadband network. The national broadband project is supported by shareholder IPBC and the government.
The new network will deliver ADSL2+ broadband to over 80,000 premises in Papua New Guinea, with a further 8,000 locations to be connected to GPON technology at speeds of up to 100 Mbps.
The project will also see the creation of a new high-speed broadband backbone – a long-haul microwave transmission network which will offer open access to both fixed-line and mobile operators.
Telikom also said it will use the backbone to deliver LTE mobile broadband services in major urban centres.
Furthermore, Huawei announced it will launch an ICT student sponsorship programme to train students on broadband technology so they can deploy and maintain the national broadband network in future years.

Raintree hotel & Suites - Port Moresby (Hotel)

8th March 2013:
GROUND BREAKING CEREMONY FOR RAINTREE HOTEL AND SUITES BY VISION CITY

Quote:
On Friday March 8th 2013, a large crowd celebrated the Ground-Breaking Ceremony for the Raintree Hotel and Suites by Vision City. The ceremony was presided over by national and international dignitaries, including PNG Prime Minister, the Hon. Peter O'Neill, Rimbunan Hijau Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Sir Tiong Hiew King, Malaysian High Commissioner Datin Seri Blanche Olbery and representatives of other international diplomatic missions.

Both the Prime Minister and the RH Chairman gave speeches underlining the substantial economic contribution that the Raintree Hotel project will make, with the Prime Minister emphasizing that RH's significant investments in PNG "are most welcome and are appreciated by the Government".

Once complete, the five-star hotel will boast 438 rooms, including 66 apartments, as well as an incredible 1,200 capacity ballroom. The hotel will also offer a gymnasium, lagoon-style swimming pool and lavish private lounge. As the RH Chairman remarked, Raintree Hotel and Suites by Vision City will set a new standard for accommodation in Papua New Guinea. Construction should be completed in 2015.

The Raintree Hotel project represents an investment of K380 million, and will provide hundreds of local jobs. The hotel will add a new dimension to the larger Vision City site, which already offers world-class shopping and dining, as well as PNG's only cinema multiplex.

The Ground-Breaking Ceremony was an unmitigated success, and an opportunity for RH PNG to communicate the scale of the Raintree Hotel Project, and the importance of the investment it represents. As the Chairman noted:

"This is an investment in tourism in PNG, and it is an investment in business in PNG. It is also an investment in the people of PNG"

CPL builds biggest supermart in PNG

Source: The National, Friday, February 22, 2013

By MALUM NALU

Quote:
THE CPL group, Papua New Guinea’s largest retailing network, plans to open the biggest supermarket set-up by far in the country between November and December this year, a company spokesman said yesterday.
He said this after taking The National on a tour of the project site at the former Port Moresby Transport yard, just next to CPL’s Waigani Central Stop N Shop supermarket.

“This is being constructed under Steamships Properties, now known as Pacific Properties,” the spokesman said.
“Nevertheless, only the fit-out costs is in excess of an estimated K20 million which CPL Group is responsible for.
“It is anticipated that the store will be a new experience to Papua New Guineans as it will be of international standard.
“The new Central Waigani will house all the retail brands of CPL Group.
“It will also have a multiplex cinema.”
CPL Group chairman Mahesh Patel announced last March that it was looking at running the “biggest and best supermarket” in Port Moresby and PNG.
“We’re going to build the biggest and best supermarket in the country,” he said.
“It’s a multi-million dollar project that will take about 20 months to complete.”
“Steamships own the land, they build, and we lease it.
“We will sign a 15-year lease.”
Patel said the new supermarket would be twice as big as CPL’s flagship Stop N Shop at Waigani Central, which has an area of 2,500sqm.
He said it should not be compared to Vision City, which was a mega mall, as this would be a stand-alone supermarket.
“This thing (new supermarket) will be 5,000sqm,” he said.
“It will be twice the size (of Waigani Central supermarket).
“There will be a few specialty stores.”
“We’re looking at a number of new initiatives.”

Ongoing Development

Steamships Harbor Commercial - Port Moresby

Quote:
This project will be the first post-industrial portside development on the fringe of Port Moresby city and will consist of two, five storey buildings with linking elements of paved concourses, awnings, waterfront colonnade and boardwalk. The buildings will house leasable office space, professional suites, basement parking, ground floor retail as well as a waters-edge restaurant and boat moorings.
The esplanade and water front elevations of the building are glazed curtain walls with perforated sunshading, while the end walls of the building provide solid relief and direct outlook towards the harbour and near city views. Building forms have the slight angular geometry typical of the steel coastal ship hulls that have used the site for many years. Artworks representative of PNG cultural themes will be used throughout the development.

Thanks for the updates Tbite. The development happening in Port Moresby is quite amazing, moreso than I would have ever anticipated. Avara and the Raintree Hotel both look really impressive. I take it the Grand Papua Hotel is now the tallest building in PNG, but I'm wondering if Avara might be even taller? It seems to be about 22 storeys from the bottom on the slope.

Some old news (2015), don't know if it's gone ahead:

Hilton to brand new-build Port Moresby development

Hilton Worldwide has signed its first Hilton Hotels and Resorts branded hotel in Papua New Guinea.

Under this management agreement with Star Mountain Plaza Ltd (SMPL), Hilton will manage the newly build Hilton Port Moresby and convention centre in the Star Mountain Plaza development in Port Moresby.

Construction of a 16-storey, mixed-use tower housing the 212-room Hilton hotel, along with office and retail space and 128 apartments, is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2015 and be completed by late 2017.

Hilton Port Moresby adds to Hilton Worldwide’s existing pipeline of five hotels in the Australasia region where the global hospitality company presently operates 21 hotels under the Hilton and DoubleTree by Hilton brands.

Also the Paga Hill Estate is a major concept/development that I don't think has been mentioned:
