Nana Akuffo-Addo would have changed the pattern.

President Mills in the US of A: Ghana Broadcasting Corp.

COMMENTARY ON PRESIDENT MILLS' VISIT TO THE US

Ghana-US relations are being taken a notch higher with the visit of President Mills to the United States this week at the invitation of President Barack Obama. The visit will afford Ghana and America the opportunity to review their bilateral relations and determine the direction of a new phase. Ghana has since independence had friendly relations with the United States. The two countries are signatories to more than 20 agreements and treaties covering such matters as agricultural commodities, aviation, defence, economic and telecommunications. The US is among Ghana's principal trading partners even to the extent that there is currently an American Chamber of Commerce working to develop closer ties in the private sector.

President Mills' visit is reciprocal to an earlier one to Ghana by President Obama in 2009. Ghana was the first African country President Obama visited after his inauguration. Before then, other sitting American Presidents like Bill Clinton, George Walker Bush and former President Jimmy Carter had visited Ghana. The latest visit by President Mills to America is his maiden official visit and is significant in the sense that, it comes at the heels of the recent inauguration and naming of the NI Highway in Ghana after former American President, George Walker Bush. Ghana received 547 million dollars from the US under the Millennium Challenge Account and is looking forward to accessing more than 300 million dollars from a second compact to undertake and complete crucial projects in the energy sector. President Mills and Barack Obama have a lot in common. They are both lawyers and former law Professors, liberal democrats who believe in the welfare of their people and even distribution of wealth. They were both elected in the same year and are seeking the renewal of their mandate this year.

The invitation extended to President Mills to visit America in this election year is perhaps to pat Ghana on the back for setting the standard in economic development with a remarkable record growth and increasingly attractive investment climate and responsible management of energy resources. As US Deputy Secretary of State, William Burns recently said on a visit to Ghana, America is proud to be able to continue to contribute to Ghana's efforts to promote economic development particularly, through its innovative new programme dubbed "The Partnership for Growth". Under this programme, America seeks to bring to bear all its different resources to support Ghana's developmental efforts. Indeed, Ghana is one of only four pilot countries around the world in which the US is seeking to launch the programme. Ghana-US partnership is mutually beneficial. Both countries are bound to achieve values in the areas of democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights. It is important Ghana forges greater bonds of friendship with a super power like the United States, especially as it seeks to build a freer, fairer democratic state. Ghana is touted as being one of Africa's stable democracies, a country that has set the pace for political stability and economic progress. As America rolls the red carpet for President Mills, Ghana will definitely be the cynosure of all eyes as it goes to election in December. President Mills has on all occasions, pledged the determination of his administration to ensure transparency and fairness in the up-coming elections. This synchronises with the commitment of the leader of the biggest opposition, Nana Akuffo Addo not to let a single drop of blood in the election
