St Paul's: The Cathedral Church of London, 604-2004
by Derek (edt) Keene

Synopses & Reviews
Publisher Comments:
St Paul’s is unique among English cathedrals for its association with the richest city in the realm and with the secular and political life of the capital. At the same time it has been a lively site of devotion, often innovative in liturgy, music, and decoration, and sometimes at the heart of conflict between opposing views. The story of St Paul’s offers many insights into the history of England as a whole and into the part played by religion in both private and public life.

This magnificent book—the first comprehensive history of St Paul’s Cathedral in thirty years—opens with a series of historical overviews of the cathedral, of the people associated with it, and of its religious, social, and political significance, from its foundation to the present. Additional essays investigate various topics related to the successive cathedrals on the site, and many well-chosen illustrations underline these themes and present the splendid features of the cathedral as it is today.

About the Author
Derek Keene is Leverhulme Professor of Comparative Metropolitan History at the Institute of Historical Research at the University of London. Arthur Burns is senior lecturer in modern British history at King’s College London. Andrew Saint is professor of architecture at the University of Cambridge.

Big name talk on London highrises if anyones interested going

http://www.architectureweek.org.uk/e...56&Highlight=1

London’s skyline is about to be transformed forever as a series of ever-taller buildings spiral upwards over the next few years. Until now the true implications of these collective proposals have not been discussed in a public forum. Organised by the Architecture Foundation and featuring acclaimed international architect Rem Koolhaas, The Big Debate will be a lively examination of the future of London’s skyline. Chaired by Rowan Moore of The Architecture Foundation, speakers include Pritzker Prize-winning architect Rem Koolhaas (OMA),Foreign Office Architects (architect tbc), Adam Caruso (Caruso St John Architects) and Lee Polisano (KPF).

The Polycentric Metropolis: Learning from the Mega-city Regions in Europe

Peter Hall, Kathy Pain

£90.00

Edition: Hardcover

Synopsis
A new 21st century urban phenomenon is emerging: the networked polycentric mega-city region. Developed around one or more cities of global status, it is characterized by a cluster of cities and towns, physically separate but intensively networked in a complex spatial division of labour. This book describes and analyses eight such regions in North West Europe.;For the first time, this work shows how businesses interrelate and communicate in geographical space - within each region, between them, and with the wider world. It goes on to demonstrate the profound consequences for spatial planning and regional development in Europe - and by implication, other similar urban regions of the world.;"The Polycentric Metropolis" introduces the concept of a mega-city region, analyses its characteristics, examines the issues surrounding regional identities, and discusses policy ramifications and outcomes for infrastructure, transport systems and regulation.;Packed with high quality maps, case study data and written in a clear style by highly experienced authors, his will be an insightful and significant analysis suitable for professionals in urban planning and policy, environmental consultancies, business and investment communities, technical libraries, and students in urban studies, geography, economics and town/spatial planning.

"Let Foster try again, next time demonstrating how to create visually charged architecture that is site-responsive, aesthetically lovable and green, although not like a gherkin."

So we should invite him to look at MoreLondon

How many towers have been built in America recently (for the last 25 years actually) can actually compete with Swiss Re and the effect it has had on it's host city?

None. Thats how many.

convert 2D topographic surveys + DTM files to 3D models

Whilst on the subject of useful links...

I worked for several years as a drawing technician, for a little architects practice in Derbyshire.

It was decided that we wanted to introduce 3D models into our project workflow, but we found the cost of outsourcing these prohibitive for our size of developments.

Subsequently, I taught myself Sketchup and we brought the model work in-house. In doing so, I found that I would regularly lose half or a full days work manually converting the 2D topo data supplied by our Surveyors, into 3D space.

As a software developer of ten years experience, I decided to remedy this problem. The results are now available online through my website.

Follow the link below to our current newsletter, where you may read the views of one early adopter. We are currently running a free trial, for those doubters amongst you! Enjoy.
