Focusing on one at a time doesn't mean ignoring the others, it just happens to be preferable to place the greatest focus and highest priority on the factors that have the biggest impact.

Haven't seen that on any other US bus. Are they the first?

Most that display anything at all, use the simple indicators at the front of the bus:

I'm thinking of the ones actually inside the bus, visible to passengers, but you get the idea.

This seems like a good idea. Ultimately, it was my realization while in San Francisco and LA, that those metro companies willfully share information with Google such that it's quite easy to traverse the city using my phone.

Until now, I'd always been hesitant to get on a bus in an unfamiliar city. However, these kinds of steps really do make a difference for ridership, I think (especially in cities like Dallas).

It seems this also exists on some buses in Las Vegas:

Transit TV in Los Angeles has TV screens that show the GPS location of the bus (so nothing a smartphone wouldn't do):

Blue Line extension to UNT (Dallas campus) - opening 2016

DART set to begin South Oak Cliff Three Line Extension project
24 January 2014

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is set to begin the South Oak Cliff Three Line Extension project on 24 January at its headquarters.

Expected to open in late 2016, the Blue Line extends north from Ledbetter Station through downtown Dallas, Mockingbird Station, Northeast Dallas, Garland and Rowlett.

The transit agency said that work on the 2.6-mile extension of its Blue Line light rail transit system from Ledbetter Station to the UNT Dallas campus is underway.

New stations will be added at Camp Wisdom and UNT Dallas, while Ledbetter Station, which currently the southern terminus of the line, will be redesigned to improve the flow of bus and pedestrian traffic.

The extension will provide potential development opportunities in the area south of Ledbetter Station to the UNT-Dallas Campus.

Camp Wisdom Station will be located near a future City of Dallas recreation center, while UNT Dallas Station will be located adjacent to the campus.
Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Atkins said: "This extension has great potential development opportunities for the area south of Ledbetter Station and on to the UNT-Dallas Campus."

DART said that the extension to UNT Dallas will complete the current light rail expansion and take the length of the US longest light rail system to 93 miles.

DART opened the first section of the Blue Line, from downtown Dallas to Illinois Station, in June 1996 as part of its initial 11-mile of light rail. The second section of the line from Illinois to Ledbetter was opened in May 1997.

Northern extensions from downtown Dallas to Mockingbird was opened in January 1997 and from Mockingbird to Garland in stages in 2001 and 2002. The line from Garland to Rowlett was completed in December 2012.

I've got a friend who studies in Dallas and she said it was a really nice city, transportation wise too. So I decided to take a quick look at the city, one logic extension of the TRE system would be another route between Dallas and Fort Worth but on the line passing through Grand Prairie and Arlington, fairly big cities not served well by public transport. Seems like a done deal to me.

Are there any obstacles not seen on the map for such a line? Or just no interest from the authorities?

The city of Arlington refuses to pay for it or any other public transit system for that matter (they don't even have a bus system).

DART accelerates opening date for DFW Airport Station

March 25, 2014
By Morgan Lyons & Mark A. Ball

Dallas Area Rapid Transit connects North Texas commuters to the world four months early and under budget with the opening of DFW Airport Station on Monday, August 18.

The five-mile Orange Line extension from Belt Line Station to the newly rebuilt Terminal A at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport will bring the nation's longest light rail system to 90 miles.

"Opening a project of this complexity early and under budget is a great testament to the work of our DART team and our colleagues at DFW Airport," DART President/Executive Director Gary Thomas said. "Support from the Federal Transit Administration and Federal Aviation Administration was also crucial to beating the targeted opening."
And photos, also from DART's website:
