I dont think these many threads are required for each and every district. That would complicate things and will not serve good.

I am sure the next topic will be Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthurai, Chidambaram, Cuddalore - Delta region. I think it can still be posted in trichy region. And another one will be created For vellore - tiruvannamalai and so ON....There is no end to it.

Dear all forumers,
Please consider my request.
Instead of blaming the new user or the user who is creating new threads,we can form a set of rules.
My suggestions are,
1.Create a sticky thread,we can call it as TamilNadu announcement/Rules/New thread Creation Request etc
2.So,Users can ask for new threads and tell why this thread is needed..Some one can act as mod/volunteer who can actively tell the user ,who requested new thread after getting the suggestion from other users.
3.Otherwise,Post a rule,which specifies which areas are covered with the existing thread,for ex,In madurai thread ,we can post info about madurai,virudhunagar,dindukal etc.

So everyone can understand views of the existing active particpants for this forum.

But we have already tooo many threads. duplicate posting r also happenings.

Our intention is, not discouraging the new user or degrading any areas.

all r our lands and all cities r ours.

But creating threads for small, small cities n in unnecessary topics r not going to give any productive work n usual information.

At the end of the day, all we can say I created this thread, we can see our name on this.. that's it. there is no big use.

ur ideas r worth to follow! appriciate.

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board is set to launch a programme for revitalising 487 ‘ooranies’ or waterbodies, in Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts.

People of the southern districts attach importance to ‘ooranies’ as they traditionally use them as their main source of drinking water. They always compare the quality of water from other sources with that of water stored in ‘ooranies,’ and invariably they consider the water from ‘oorani’ superior, says a senior official of the Board. ‘Ooranies’ have been harvesting rainwater in the region, which receive low rain.

Neglect and silting


Over the years, these waterbodies have fallen into disuse, owing to human neglect and silting. And many have become polluted with fertilizer used in catchments.

Aware of the significance of these waterbodies, the officials have taken steps to revitalise them in the last four years.

Now, with the financial assistance from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, the TWAD Board plans to rejuvenate these water sources at a cost of Rs. 25 crore.

Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin will launch the programme at a function scheduled for August 17 at Sivaganga.

Bids to be floated


For most of the waterbodies, the Board will carry out the work after floating bids, and in respect of 40-50 ‘ooranies,’ the officials are toying with the idea of roping in non-governmental organisations.

In either case, the local community will be involved, the official says.

The Board has studied lessons from a pilot project implemented a few years ago by the Rural Development Department, together with Anna University-Chennai. Treatment of catchments, inlet and outlet arrangements, clay lining wherever necessary and filter media arrangement will be among the components of the revitalisation programme.

The official says it has been planned to cover all the waterbodies before the northeast monsoon sets in by the middle of October.

Normally, in the southern districts, the monsoon turns vigorous in the second half of November.

The Board also proposes to sensitise the presidents of all village panchayats to the importance of the programme.

The Spices Board will invest Rs.18 crore on a new spices park at Sivaganga, said Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh on Saturday.

The foundation for the park was laid by Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram at a function at Kottakavadi near Sivaganga.

Mr. Ramesh said the proposed spices park would establish machinery for cleaning, sorting, grading, packaging, storing, sterilising and other work. The focus would be to encourage chilli, a leading crop in Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and nearby districts, and turmeric crops. Though there was a demand to open the park at Salem and Erode, where turmeric crop was abundant, Mr. Ramesh said it had chosen Sivaganga basically to provide a fillip to develop the undeveloped area.

Medicinal plants, being raised in and around Madurai district, would also get a boost, as it was planned to patronise farmers of medicinal plants.

The Spices Board, he said, had opened a park in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh a few days ago. New parks would come up in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat. Mr. Chidambaram said that three companies based in South Africa, Malaysia and Sri Lanka had agreed to set up their units in the Sivaganga park. It was expected that 20 to 30 industries might be set up in the park in the near future. It would be immensely helpful to farmers of chilli, turmeric, medicinal plants and tamarind, as the focus would be to export their products. .............

There are some developments going on in and around karaikudi which can give some hope to the people of this region.

"A team of officials led by Collector Pankaj Kumar Bansal and Sub-Collector Tharus Ahamed inspected several locations on Sunday. After much deliberations, the Government land available at Kazhanivasal and Tahsildar Nagar off Tiruchi Road have been short-listed. Mr. Bansal told The Hindu that the proposed medical college at Sivaganga would meet the long-felt demand of the district, as it would have a state-of-the-art hospital. After its inauguration, the district headquarters hospital would function from Karaikudi. Though 10 acres of land was enough for establishing a district headquarters hospital, it was proposed to acquire around 50 acres of land for it since one more medical college might be set up in the district."

SIVAGANGA: The State Government has sanctioned Rs.104 crore for the construction of a medical college here for which Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi is scheduled to lay the foundation stone in the second week of this month.

Collector Pankaj Kumar Bansal told The Hindu that Rs.97 crore would be spent for the construction of buildings alone. The remaining Rs.7 crore was meant for miscellaneous expenditure.

A 300-bedded hospital with all required infrastructure and equipment would be established. Mr. Bansal said that other facilities for the college, including administrative buildings, classrooms, hostel buildings, staff quarters and parking lots, would be constructed.

Around 45 acres of land had been identified for the college, which would be located near the stadium.

The land, which was part of the Raja Duraisingam Mannar College, had been transferred from the Education Department to the Health Department.

Mr. Bansal said that 100 students would be admitted initially.

The college would become operational in a year. Higher officials from the Department of Health, Public Works Department and other departments had made several visits to Sivaganga to discuss the plan, proposed facilities, steps needed for receiving recognition from the Medical Council of India and speedy implementation of the construction work.

Instead of constructing medical col in sivaganga ...it can b constructed in karaikudi...karaikudi already has got educational importance more than madurai in southern region.....als it has got Central's CECRI too.... sivanga is just the district headquarters ...but kkdi has got everything...so sivanga dist can be changed to kkdi dist.... in near future kkdi will b one of the tier-II cities........als its a boomtown for film making... get going karaikkudi.....

I also agree with kovai dreamz....the medical college was long pending demand of karaikudi people and as it is already an educational hub it should have got the proposed medical college...i don know why these politicians chose sivaganga which has nothing but collectorate.

As there were no new projects for karaikudi for some 10 years..its a big disappointment for karaikudi...we hope the union home minister will take steps to bring some higher institutes to karaikudi.

As far as I know P.Chidambaram has done nothing big except the two express trains to chennai from karaikudi.A union minister of his calibre he could have done much for karaikudi.

One happy news for karaikudi is that Under ground sewage project is going to start next month and the new bus stand to periyar statue 100 feet road is gonig to be upgraded with median and footpath.And karaikudi is one of the municipalities covered in JNNURM scheme for city development plan.

Does karaikudi figure under JNNURM(small and medium sized towns)???

Chennai, Madurai, and Coimbatore are included under the sub mission urban infrastructure and governance of the JNNURM, where the bulk of the projects are and money is being spent. Under another sub mission called basic service to urban poor, there is a project called integrated housing slum development programme where towns in TN are also present. But the project is in small scale involving very small expenditure. You can find it in the following link,
