CHENNAI: Commuting can become an ordeal when the summer hits its peak.

This year there is a way to beat the heat while commuting in the city even if you do not own an air-conditioned vehicle of your own.

The air-conditioned fleet of Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), comprising 10 Volvo buses, on five routes seems to be gaining in popularity. From near empty buses a couple of months ago to a decent number of patrons, more people are looking upon the buses as an option for travel. K. Murali, a businessman, said that he preferred taking the AC bus to using his two-wheeler . “It gets very difficult to commute in the heat and traffic, particularly in the afternoon. The AC bus is a comfortable alternative,” he said.

A foreign tourist, Christie Johnson, said that she found the bus a great way to travel in the city and at the same time escape the wrath of the summer. She, however, complained that information on the departure timings of the buses were not easily available.

An official of MTC said that it was planning to introduce 20 more AC buses this financial year. “The buses are targeted at the middle and upper classes. Our long term goal is to encourage more people to switch from their cars to public transport. We hope the AC buses will assist us in achieving this,” he said. The minimum fare in the AC buses is Rs.10 and the maximum Rs 38.

Ready for use: The underpass, which connects Grand Southern Trunk Road with the Chennai bypass. —

TAMBARAM: The underpass (subway) to connect Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road with Chennai Bypass at Irumbuliyur has been completed and is expected to be thrown open to traffic soon.

The Rs. 4-crore project, of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), on which work began about two years ago, would immensely benefit motorists, especially those travelling long distance from Chengalpattu and Tambaram towards Bangalore and Kolkata.

It has been built under the road over bridge across the railway lines between Tambaram and Perungalathur railway stations. The subway is 42 metres long, 13 metres wide and its height is 5.5 metres. It was taken up under the Second Phase of Chennai Bypass project that included widening and extension from Madhuravoyal to Madhavaram.

Chennai Bypass was taken up under NHAI’s Golden Quadrilateral project and the first phase of the 19-km long road between Irumbuliyur and Madhuravoyal was for easier connectivity between two National Highways, NH 45 – GST Road and NH 4 – Bangalore Highway. It was dedicated in June 2002 and its extension to Madhavaram would connect another National Highway, NH 5 – Kolkata Highway, officials told The Hindu. Till now, motorists had to a travel till Perungalathur, take a ‘U’ turn and come back on GST Road to reach Chennai Bypass. The opening of the subway would save about 3 km and more importantly, it would prevent traffic congestion. Containers from Madras Export Processing Zone – Special Economic Zone in Tambaram Sanatorium would find it easier to reach Chennai Port, officials added. As even the final touches to this important project were completed, it would be opened soon, officials added.

Mahindra to set up plant near Chennai

http://www.business-standard.com/common/news_article.php?autono=319018&leftnm=1&subLeft=0&chkFlg=

Decision comes weeks after the company pulls out of a joint venture with Renault and Nissan for a facility there.

Weeks after opting out of a proposed joint venture with Renault and Nissan Motor for a manufacturing facility at Chennai, utility vehicle maker Mahindra & Mahindra has decided to set up its own plant near the south Indian city.

M&M pulled out of the deal earlier this year and subsequently announced it was setting up a greenfield plant at Chakan, near Pune, with an estimated investment of Rs 1,500 crore, to produce 300,000 vehicles.

Commercial production at Chakan is expected to start in two years, about the same time Renault and Nissan will launch production at the Chennai unit.

Pawan Goenka, president (automotive sector), M&M, told Business Standard that the company is committed to invest in the south, where a new plant will be set up near Chennai. He said company executives were in talks with the Tamil Nadu government on the deal. Plans for the Chennai plant are being finalised and work is likely to begin in 2010.
“We have several business interests in Chennai. Mahindra as a group is very interested in Tamil Nadu. We want to look at Tamil Nadu for the next major expansion of our automotive business,” Goenka said.

M&M, Renault and Nissan had in February last year announced plans to set up a plant with an investment of Rs 4,500 crore, to produce 4,00,000 vehicles a year for the three companies.

Goenka said that the plan was reviewed and the company decided to opt out after deciding to set up its own plant at Chakan. On Monday, M&M signed an agreement with the Maharashtra government for the Chakan unit and announced it would invest Rs 4,000 crore in the project.

The plant will make trucks for M&M’s venture with Navistar Inc’s International Truck & Engine unit and will also have a powertrain facility.

Despite opting out of the manufacturing JV with Renault and Nissan, M&M will continue to sell Renault products, Goenka said.

This will be through the Mahindra Renault JV which makes Logan models at the Nashik plant. Other Renault products on the Logan platform will also be sold through this JV company in the years ahead.

New utility vehicle to cost Rs 4-5 lakh

M&M plans to roll out a five-seater mass market utility vehicle (UV) next year. It would be priced between Rs 4-5 lakh.

The new mass market UV, which has been developed at a cost of Rs 500-600 crore, would not be a trimmed down variant of any of the company’s existing models, but one designed and developed from scratch.

The prototype of the model is ready and is expected to be sent for homologation (for safety and emission clearances) by end of this year.

Discussing M&M’s product plans for the next three to four years, Pawan Goenka, president (automotive sector), said that an all-new sports utility vehicle was also being developed and that this will be launched in 2010.

The new SUV will be first rolled out from the company’s proposed plant in Chakan, near Pune.

Goenka said that while the new mass market UV will meet safety and emission norms, the compelling price will be its USP. The current year will see the launch of the much-awaited UV Ingenio.

City to host international jewellery expo

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Emphasis will be on silver and platinum jewellery at the exposition

Event expected to attract 12,000 visitors from across the globe

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHENNAI: If you are among those who change jewellery to suit the occasion, then a jewellery exposition to be held at Chennai Trade Centre, Nandambakkam, in February next year should interest you.

The exhibition, to be conducted by Gem and Jewellery India International Exhibition, will bring to the city jewellery from China, Thailand, Indonesia and Hong Kong.

The emphasis will be on silver and platinum jewellery, said Uday Kumar Vummidi, chairman of Gem and Jewellery India International Exhibition.

A memorandum was signed by representatives of the Madras Jewellery and Diamond Merchants’ Association and M. Gandhi, managing director of CMP India, on Saturday.

Chennai was chosen to host the exhibition, given the quality consciousness among jewellery buyers here.

“South Indians have a keen knowledge when it comes to diamond and gold. The diamonds owned and sold in the south are of far superior quality when compared to those sold in the north,” Mr. Vummidi said.

Last year, India consumed 900 tonnes of gold. In addition, approximately 200 tonnes of recycled gold was sold in the country. South India’s share in new gold sale was 45 per cent.

The region is also the largest consumer of silver and platinum.

The exhibition is expected to attract 12,000 visitors, mostly retailers, from across the globe. The trade show, which will have groups of countries and individual exhibitors taking part, would help develop business, according to Association president Pravin M. Mehta.

On whether silver jewellery from China would pose a threat to Indian artisans, Mr. Vummidi said China specialised in trinkets and necklaces unlike Indian artisans, who focussed on pooja articles. Chinese artisans were not a direct challenge.

Learning from the Chinese

Instead, the exhibition would provide a platform for Indian artisans to learn from their Chinese counterparts, he said.

Speed should be strictly restricted to 30 - 40 KMPH. We need to train drivers now itself before loops join the flyover. Sometime back I drove to Airport at 0130 hrs. I maintained 40 Kmph. It took 20 minutes only from CBD . But I saw vechicles driven at breakneck speed,, overtaking me like a hurricane. How many minutes did they save?

Any news about Airport flyover? As usual, I heard of Defence Dept not releasing some land..! It remains a dark spot where ghosts may have gala time!
