After the end of the testing phase, from January 23rd AVE trains will start operating between Madrid and Castellón, thus reducing travel times from 3h 10m to 2h 32m.

This change has been possible thanks to the installation of mixed gauge in the classic line between Valencia and Castellón. As a result Madrid - Castellón services no longer need to change gauge in Valencia, although some services will continue to do so due to limited standard gauge capacity between Valencia and Castellón (just one of the tracks has been adapted to mixed gauge), and also because some Madrid - Castellón services continue up to Vinaròs, while there's no standard gauge between Castellón and Vinaròs (the line will be regauged in the future). The latter will be branded either Alvia or Intercity.

So the situation starting from January 23rd will be as follows:

2 daily AVE trains Madrid - Castellón in standard gauge.
1 daily Alvia train Gijón - Madrid - Castellón, changing gauge in Valencia.
1 daily Intercity train Madrid - Castellón (extended to Vinaròs on weekends), changing gauge in Valencia.
