Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB) is building a 30-storey RM148.58-million office tower for Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (MIDA).

MRCB group managing director Shahril Ridza Ridzuan said the built-up of the tower would be 283,000 sq ft and is expected to be completed within two years.

The project would be financed from MRCB’s own funds and borrowings, he added.

Shahril was speaking after the signing ceremony of a sale and purchase agreement between MRCB and its subsidiary, Kuala Lumpur Sentral Sdn Bhd and MIDA in Kuala Lumpur on March 12.

He said the new MIDA headquarters would complete the quartet of new developments to anchor the frontage of Kuala Lumpur Sentral (KL Sentral)

Currently, only one of the four has been completed - the Hilton Kuala Lumpur and Le Meridien hotels - facing Jalan Travers.

He said MRCB was also building the new headquarters for the UEM Group and the Companies Commission of Malaysia (CCM) in the same location. The UEM headquarters is 50% completed.

Shahril said MRCB is looking for opportunities to increase its land bank and its focus is on “integrated urban development”.

It was looking for land in urban areas, including Kuala Lumpur and northern Peninsular Malaysia.

MRCB was discussing with several parties on the matter, but he declined to elaborate.

On the 29.08-ha KL Sentral, Shahril said the company still had 12.12-ha of underdeveloped land in the area with a development value of RM4 billion.

He also said checkout facilities at the City Air Terminal in Stesen Sentral would be ready by year-end.

“Passengers can check out at KL Sentral if they don’t want to check out at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Their luggage will come straight (from the airport) to KL Sentral,” he added.

Mida pays RM148m for office tower in KL Sentral

March 13 2007

THE Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (Mida) is buying a 30-storey office tower in KL Sentral for RM148.58 million and it will be its future headquarters.

The building, which is under construction, will be developed by Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd, which is developing the KL Sentral area in Brickfields.

The purchase will be funded by a RM160 million allocation channelled through the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (Miti) under the Ninth Malaysia Plan.

"We've been the anchor tenant at Phase 1 of Plaza Sentral since 2002 and we'll continue renting until our new headquarters is completed in mid-2009," Mida director-general Datuk R. Karunakaran said.

Construction of this 30-storey block started in December 2006.

"As the construction works progresses, we'll make the necessary payment," he said, adding that the new headquarters will have a built-up area of 283,000 sq ft.

"It is strategic for Mida to be located in KL Sentral because foreign investors landing at KLIA can just hop on the Express Rail Link and reach our office in 30 minutes," he said.

Karunakaran was speaking to reporters after representing Mida to sign the sale and purchase agreement with MRCB and Kuala Lumpur Sentral Sdn Bhd yesterday.

MRCB group managing director Datuk Shahril Ridza Ridzuan said the new MIDA headquarters would prominently anchor the frontage of KL Sentral.

"KL Sentral is fast becoming the hub for facilitating authorities with the new Companies Commission of Malaysia headquarters and new UEM headquarters coming up next to the Mida development," he said.

The 28.8ha Kuala Lumpur Sentral is an urban development made up of office buildings, a shopping mall and service apartments. So far, 8ha is developed while another 8ha is still being built and the remaining 12.8ha is reserved for future developments.

When asked whether MRCB is looking to expand its landbank, Shahril replied: "We always welcome the opportunity to acquire strategic pieces of land for urban development. We'll make announcements (on land acquisitions) as we go along," he added.

MIDA's new HQ in 2009
Adapted from NST Business Times and Star Biz

Come mid-2009, foreign and local investors can look forward to visiting the Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (MIDA) at its new headquarters in KL Sentral, next to its present office.

MIDA signed the sales and purchase agreement with Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd, (MRCB) and Kuala Lumpur Sentral Sdn Bhd yesterday, for the 30-storey office tower in KL Sentral designated to be MIDA's headquarters. The Minister of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz and MIDA Chairman Tan Sri Zainal Abidin Sulong witnessed the event.

The RM148.58 million tower under construction by MRCB will have a built-up area of 283,000 sq ft. and will incorporate a new feature called Sky Cubes, the first of its kind in Malaysia, where additional space would be provided in certain parts of the building.

MIDA Director-General, Datuk R. Karunakaran said the new office tower would enable MIDA to expand and recruit an additional 184 staff under its restructuring plan to enhance its services to existing and potential investors.

"It is strategic for MIDA to be located in KL Sentral because foreign investors landing at KLIA can just hop on the Express Rail Link and reach our office in 30 minutes," Datuk Karunakaran said. MIDA is currently operating from Block 4 in Plaza Sentral.

MIDA has been granted a RM160 million allocation for the office building under the Ninth Malaysia Plan, to be chanelled through the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI).

MRCB Group Managing Director, Datuk Shahril Ridza Ridzuan said the new MIDA headquarters would prominently anchor the frontage of KL Sentral.

The 28.8ha KL Sentral in Brickfields, planned as an urban development area, comprising office blocks, shopping mall and service apartments, with the added advantage of its transportation hub, has become a premium address for business. Besides the new MIDA office tower, the area will also house the new Companies Commission of Malaysia headquarters and the new UEM headquarters.
