NEWS ABOUT RAILWAY OF AZERBAIJAN

The construction on Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project will restart in Georgia after March 15, Azerbaijan State Railway told APA.

Azerbaijan State Railway said the construction in Georgia was suspended because of unfavorable weather in January. Design engineering and small-scale work was done during this period. Ukraine’s KyivHiproTrans Research and Development Institute prepared the working drafts for reconstruction of Marabda-Tetriskaro section (29.2km) and Akhalkalak Station as part of its undertakings in Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway Project. The sides agreed on both projects.

Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey signed the final document on the construction of Baku-Tbilisi-Kars on February 8, 2007. The construction of the new railway in Georgia started on November 21, 2007. As per the agreement, Azerbaijan undertook to extend a $200mln loan to Georgia’s Marabda-Kartsakhi Railroad LLC for 25 years at 1% interest rate annually. The loan will be spent on construction of a 29km long railroad in Georgia, a ST-2 wheel base in Turkish-Georgian border and rehabilitation of old railway.
The project costs more than $600 million. Azerbaijan’s Azerinshaatservis Company constructs Georgian part of the railway. Construction of railroads is slated for operation in late 2011.

A 76km long railway will be laid in Turkey as part of Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Rail Link.

Proposed High Speed Trains for Azerbaijan

Today.Az » Business » Azerbaijan may buy Korean bullet trains

23 May 2006 [15:45] - Today.Az

Korean high-speed trains may run through the United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Construction and Transportation said on Monday.

"The United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan expressed strong wills to adopt the Korean high-speed railway system during President Roh Moo-hyun's recent visit to those countries," the ministry said in a statement.

According to The Korea Herald, the ministry therefore plans to dispatch a task force jointly organized by the Korea Railroad Research Institute and the Korea Rail Network Authority to prepare for building railroads in the two nations.

The UAE plans to invest $3 billion in setting up a 130-kilometer high-speed railway connecting the airports in the capital Abu Dhabi and the city of Dubai. Azerbaijan also plans to spend $20 billion in building a 503-kilometer high-speed railroad from the capital Baku to the neighboring country Georgia.

High-speed trains developed by the KRRI are currently under test operation at home and are to be in use by October next year. The railway will connect the capital with the country's southwest.

The Transportation Ministry also plans to enter the railroad markets of China and Brazil, and to form a council of government and industry experts to support the overseas sales.
