The Ordsall Chord is fundamental to the Northern Hub's reorganisation of services through Manchester - forgetting about it simply isn't an option.

So why isn't it under construction?

In any other country it would be - but as usual we're all just sitting around doing fug all, aren't we? For the last two years now. Get this thing under construction and get it operational. December 2016 simply isn't good enough

If you just had a blank canvas to go and build everything than I would agree but this is central Manchester. Its complicated and you have numerous grounps to keep happy, especially English Heritage who seem to have a large amount of power!

I would imagine it takes some time to design a bridge from scratch as well, not to mention arrange all the logistics. That along with the all the road closures, dealing with Utilities companies, demolition firms, the car park owners. I mean the amount of detail in those files published must of took a year on its own before any real work has even started.

Theres plenty of projects around the world that have been on hold/half built for years so its certainly not just an English thing.

It will be done soon enough!

I understand your sentiments VDB but Victoria is clearly the priority and all resources are (rightly) poured into bringing that station into the 21st century in preparation for new Northern services in 2016-18. I'm just happy redevelopment has finally started at Victoria - I thought it would never happen so I'm just happy atm.

They don't always get it right in other countries....

"The whole underground project has become a symbol for cover-ups and sloppy workmanship. The Koelner [local paper] described researching the latest developments as being comparable to reading "a report from a banana republic."

and this is in 'super efficient' Germany...!

Even more telling is that the main contractors were Bilfinger Berger who have been making a complete pig's ear of the Edinburgh Tram project since 2008.

Never mind the farce of Berlin's new airport, or Stuttgart's equivalent to Crossrail.

Today and tomorrow - final chance to quiz the team. Bexley Square Salford. If you find yourself behind a fat chap with glasses going on and on - tell me to shut up. Assuming that is I am the only fat chap attending.

I have been reading the documentation on the NR website for the latest consultation. I have not read it all but the most important bits.

Having done so I have come to the conclusion that the reinstatement of platforms 3 and 4 and the construction of the new platform 5 will not be provided as part of the Chord or the Hub. The track realignment only seems to allow for these platforms to be provided at a later date if and when required and when money is available. Ie the passive provision talked about at the beginning.

I asked them specifically about this at the consultation on 9th May. The explanation is that you are correct in that it's not part of the Chord. They aren't currently funded by the Hub either but Salford Council are pushing hard to get somebody to pay for it. It just sounds like one of those budget fudges, different pots of money for this and that, but doesn't sound anything but positive ultimately.
