Ha ha. Nah. In Brisbane I had a 15min walk which was sublime.

We live where we do here because it's a short walk for my wife and a train ride outbound for me.

I walk past these buildings nice to see the lights coming on in them.

Truly amazing design.

Yes, I would say in brisbane to live within 30 minutes by public transport (not counting walk/wait) it's going to cost you at least $400k-$500k for a 3bed townhouse and $500k-$550k for 4bed home.

IMHO the way to fix housing affordability is to make outer areas with huge dwelling capacity (e.g. ripley/caboolture/beaudesert) viable commuting distance to the CBD. you don't do that with roads, you do it with PT. completely adequate houses in these areas cost $400k and if it took 30mins to get from yarrabilba station to central station they'd be perfectly acceptable compromises. when it takes 1-2hrs fighting the traffic then nope.

There is nothing wrong with doing this, but if this is the only thing you do, then the de facto outcome is exclusion: exclusion of poor working class families from inner city residence, as the public housing stock in the valuable landscape is repurposed to achieve financial goals irrespective of the social outcome. It risks ghettoization. It also entrenches the car as a lifestyle because inevitably, people will reject PT outcomes for driving, as a function of other economic drivers like regional shopping centers and the lack of close shops to homes, because of other planning decisions.

So, sure: lets make the outer suburbs livable and affordable and invest in PT. but can we also please build public supported housing stock in the inner city? Can we please require developers to support public housing to get approval, as other cities do? Can we include rental in the model and demand tenancy laws which permit long term relationships for people on income support?
