SARIKEI | Sarawak | Town, Division & District

Sarikei
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sarikei is a town, and the capital of the Sarikei District (985 square kilometers) in Sarikei Division, Sarawak, east Malaysia. It is located on the Rajang River, near where the river empties into the South China Sea. The district population (year 2000 census) was 61,100. The population is culturally mixed, with mostly Iban, Melanau, Malay and Chinese predominating.

The economy of the town is primarily agricultural, and Sarikei is famed for its pineapples and its pepper. The center of town has many old Chinese shophouses from the 1930s. It is also a major transportation hub for traffic on both the Pan Borneo Highway and the Rajang river. Anybody traveling by road or express boat from Kuching to Sibu must pass through Sarikei.

The most distinctive feature of the bustling waterfront is a 3.6 m high pineapple statue.

The town itself consists of a main road, Repok Road which is bisected by another road leading to the new development in Kampung Seberang.

Taiwan firm to invest RM2b in halal park
By Sulok Tawie Published: 2008/09/13
BusinessTimes

A TAIWANESE food-based and biotech company will invest more than RM2 billion at the Tanjung Manis Halal Park in Sarikei Division, Sarawak over the next three years.

This follows the signing of legal documents for the granting of licence to Sea Party Technology Co Ltd to occupy the world's largest halal park for the upstream and downstream halal food and manufacturing activities.

The Taiwan firm signed the agreement with Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corp (STIDC), Tanjung Manis Food and Industrial Park Sdn Bhd and Halal Industry Development Corp (HDC).

Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud witnessed the signing ceremony.

Sea Party Group was represented by its chief executive officer Dr Ray Ling Hsing Jui while STIDC by its acting deputy general manager Hashim Bojet. Also present were Tanjung Manis Food and Industrial Park Sdn Bhd director Mohammed Azwar Mahmud and HDC chairman Tan Sri Syed Jalaludin Syed Salim.

Speaking to reporters after the event, Abdul Taib said the investment will speed up the development of the halal park.

"We are looking at about RM20 billion investment by local and foreign companies at the halal park," he said, stressing that the state government was getting the full support from the Federal government.

It's not a hotel but just normal shophouses (belongs to Mr. Hii of Kingwood Hotels)
