It's definitely much more than a word or two for a large section of the population, but it largely depends on many factors, including people's age, educational background, and even socioeconomic background. To be able to speak and understand spoken language fluently, one generally has to either have lived in a country where the language is spoken for some time, or really use the language on a regular basis in some other way. While in Israel everyone learns English and many people know it at a reasonably high level, as the original poster mentioned they can read/write well, but they'd probably need a few months of immersion to achieve oral fluency. Don't forget that despite the relatively high level of English education in Israel, it remains a country where the main language is not English. All subjects in Israeli schools (for the Jewish majority) are taught in Hebrew with no exception, with English simply being one of the subjects taught. It is different from some other countries where (often more privileged) students are taught completely in English from an early age, or where one of the widely used languages is English (e.g. in India). Watching TV shows certainly helps, but all of the Western shows in Israel have Hebrew subtitles, and the ones for little children (e.g. cartoons) are usually dubbed into Hebrew. PS: In many fields in university, students in Israel are required to have a good knowledge of English because English-language textbooks are often used in their original untranslated forms. Occasionally there are even professors who speak English. This is certainly true in Engineering, since I have a good friend in Israel who's studying that right now.

Seriously, its a forum...im not going to put so much efforts as I would writing a business case or a school report. it took you 10 minutes to correct me.. (posted 9:52, edited 10:02). You gotta invest more of your time into better things. And its more like an isuckmydickuntilthenewversionarrivesPad

I dunno, I studied my English in Israel (obviously) and at the very least I could read stuff in English after I finished school.
I think I could also understand but not talk back as I didn't have enough practice at the time. I learned to speak after I started working as IT/tech support guy in a high tech firm whose clients were mostly Americans. My boss pretty much forced me to start talking to them and after a while it was fine

I just wanted to show Panorma on Bloor. Its a Bar/Lounge/Restaurant place ![]() Because when you come up on Bloor Street, you are on a hill of some sorts, you kinda have a better view of Toronto. The Manulife building which is like 45 floors would actually be 100+ floors w/ the hill if it was in the downtown financial core. A great shot to take

Hey Kappa. I'm moving to Boston or Chicago next year and I might visit Toronto before going back to work.
