I am glad you like it.

I miss Scotland a lot but maybe this year I'll try to come over again - for a few days. Keep fingers crossed!

Scotland voted as the world's best destination for cinema lovers

STV News - 15th June, 2015

Quote:
Scotland has been voted the world's best destination for cinema lovers in a US poll.

Readers of USA Today and 10 Best picked Scotland over New Zealand and Austria in the online vote to crown the "best cinematic destination".

They listed the Glenfinnan viaduct - as seen in the Harry Potter films - and Rosslyn Chapel in Midlothian as must-sees for cinephiles.

Poll organisers said: "When you think about how often Scotland features in iconic film franchises - Harry Potter, James Bond, Braveheart and The Da Vinci Code to name a few - it's no surprise this country came in first place."

Petra in Jordan, which was featured in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, was runner-up in the vote.

Tourism body VisitScotland described the win as a "fantastic accolade".

Blockbusters Skyfall, Prometheus and The Dark Knight Rises all feature scenes shot in Scotland. It is also the backdrop for the hit US television series Outlander.

VisitScotland chief executive Malcolm Roughead said: "This is a fantastic accolade for Scotland, which has beaten some of the world's most iconic film locations to take this award.

"Given our country's incredible and unique scenery, our range of spectacular buildings, as well as the warmth of our welcome, it is no wonder that it continues to attract some of the top film-makers from all over the world.

"Set-jetting, where people visit their favourite filming locations, is hugely popular and Scotland's victory in this USA Today poll is further testimony to this country's growing reputation as one of the world's greatest film sets."

There's no doubt we have a lot of scenery and history crammed into a relatively small bit of planet. I once did an extended road trip in the US and did come across those moments when you feel you've driven into a film setting - but I also recall massive periods of emptyness - where not a lot happened for hundreds of miles.

I'll be coming to Scotland end of May to see some of the places missed last time

We start in Edinburgh, then Falkirk (Kelpies &Falkirk Wheel), Stirling Castle and Wallace Monument, maybe Scone Palace, then Queen's View and via the valleys to Glen Coe (I hope the weather will be much better this time!). Fort William (and gondola), Glenfinnan, white beach in Morar. Next will be Isle of Skye (2 days) and if only the weather is fine will go to Elgol and Loch Coruisk. On the way back to the capital we will go via Oban.

And now the question: any secret gems, any places, pubs, restaurants, etc. which you can recommend on the way?

Or maybe any chance to meet with the Scottish Forum Users in one of the places for a pint?

For any suggestions I can promise tens of new photos of beautiful Scotland!

Scotland tops in Europe for gay equality and human rights

The Scotsman - 10th May, 2016

Quote:
Scotland has been rated the best country in Europe for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) equality and human rights for the second year running.

Scotland continues to be ahead of the rest of the UK and all other European countries in the legal protections offered to LGBTI people, according to an annual review of LGBTI equality and human rights laws and government policies.

The Rainbow Europe Index 2016 measures progress in 49 European countries on LGBTI equality against a 52-point criteria that includes legal protections from discrimination in employment and services, measures to tackle hate crime, rights and recognition for transgender, non-binary and intersex people, and equality in family law including same-sex marriage and parenting rights.

Scotland rose to the top of the Index last year following the passage of the SNP Scottish Government’s equal marriage legislation.

Angela Crawley MP, the SNP spokesperson for Women, Children and Equalities at Westminster said: “The fact that Scotland continues to be rated the best country in Europe for LGBTI equality is welcome recognition for the progress we are making to ensure Scotland is a fair and equal country for everyone.

“The SNP is committed to equality and social justice for all. We were proud to pass Scotland’s progressive equal marriage and hate crime laws, but we know that the job of achieving full equality is not yet done.

“That’s why the SNP has pledged to reform gender recognition law to secure greater equality for transgender and non-binary people.

“It’s why the SNP Scottish Government is investing record levels of funding in projects to secure LGBTI, gender, race and disability equality, and it’s why the SNP is committed to ensuring education, healthcare, gender reassignment, policing and other public services are inclusive and meet the needs of all people, including LGBTI people.

“We are taking action in many other areas too, from tackling hate crime to abolishing employment tribunal fees to promoting inclusivity in sport, but it is important that the UK government also listens and acts in those areas that are still reserved to Westminster, including the need to ensure all trans, non-binary and intersex people have full legal protections from discrimination, to reform the asylum system that fails too many LGBTI people, and to promote LGBTI equality around the world.

“That’s why the SNP will continue to act in government and push the UK government to take action too.”

While Scotland remains best in Europe for LGBTI equality, meeting 90.4% of ILGA-Europe’s criteria, the UK as a whole has fallen behind Malta (88%) and Belgium (82%).

This is because England and Wales meets 82.3% of the criteria and Northern Ireland meets 70.75% of the criteria, bringing the overall score for the UK as a whole down to an average of 81%.

Scotland is ahead of the rest of the UK because it has more progressive laws and government policies on transgender and intersex equality, hate crime and hate speech, and equal marriage.

Last year SNP Leader Nicola Sturgeon was recognised as ‘Politician of the Year’ at the Scottish LGBTI Awards for bringing forward progressive equal marriage legislation and for her wider commitment to LGBTI equality.

The SNP also has the highest proportion of LGBTI elected representatives of any party in both the Scottish and Westminster parliaments.

At the Scottish Parliament election the SNP pledged to go further on LGBTI equality in Scotland, including by reforming gender recognition laws for transgender and non-binary people to meet international best practice.

Rough Guides name Scotland 2nd top country to visit worldwide

The Scotsman - 3rd January 2017

Quote:
Scotland has come second in a list of top 10 countries to visit in 2017.

“Wildlife, whisky and a wonderfully warm welcome” were behind the decision by travel book company Rough Guides to name Scotland in its top ten “must see” destinations, which also includes Uganda, Bolivia and India.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon seemed delighted by the news, tweeting: “Scotland is the 2nd top country in the world to visit in 2017 according to @RoughGuides. Brilliant!”

The travel company said the North Coast 500, a rugged road-trip route through the Highlands and the country’s “rapidly evolving” food and drink scene were part of the reason for the decision.

A spokesperson added: “If you’re the type to eschew beer for butterbeer, the 20th anniversary of the first Harry Potter book makes a great excuse for a trip.

“Hop on the Jacobite steam train (also known as the Hogwarts Express) for a magical journey over mountains and freshwater lochs, hang out in JK Rowling’s charming Edinburgh haunts, or hike out to the site of Hagrid’s hut in awe-inspiring Glen Coe.

“Getting here is simple, too, with plenty of cheap flights from Europe and refurbished sleeper trains from England.”

Scotland was beaten out of the number one spot by India.

I loved every single bit of it, it was heartwarming. It's aesthetically pleasing, the country is such a picture perfect destination in every way.

I'm always amazed how modern this tennis court looks, despite being built in 1539!
