RYBNIK (and surroundings)

Hi, just one request: watch in resolution 1280x800 or higher.

Rybnik is a town located in southern Upper Silesia, half way from Katowice to Ostrava (CZ). Although officially it has a population over 141,000, in fact the town itself has about 25,000. First mentioned in the Middle Ages, it became a significant city after II World War because of its coal resources.

1. Let's start our journey with Rybnik's Basilica. Completed in 1906 after just three years of contruction, became a significant landmark of the town.

2. Although over 100 years old, it's still called the old church on contrary to the Mater Dolorosa church in downtown Rybnik.

3. Recently, the church has been renovated with an approx. cost of 3 mln €.

4. Ludwig Schneider, an architect of the church, is widely known because of his numerous churches in Silesia, Moravia, Denmark and East Germany.

5. Church's past wasn't nice. In 1922 it was largely destroyed because of the explosion of dynamite at Rybnik's Railway Station. In 1956 north tower was set in fire.

6. St Anthony of Padua, church's patron, is very popular among Silesian Catholics as a saint of lost things.

7. Kosciuszki Street connects the basilica with a railway station. Miner's technical school with a nice mosaic visible on the right.

8. This is Saint Vallier street. Saint Vallier and Rybnik were the very first so-called partner towns of Iron Curtain's two sides. Cooperation deal was signed in 1961, so last year was the 50th anniversary.

9. Here we see a mysterious building. It looks like popular in Weimar Republic social block but well, Rybnik wasn't a part of Germany at that time...

10. The Liberty Place is Rybnik's main bus station since the 1920s.

11. The Theatre of Rybnik Area is a significant cultural institution of the region.

Let's go downtown.

Sobieski Street was Rybnik's main street for a long time but since shopping malls in city centre were build, the retail went there.

Restaurant and hotel Świerklaniec were mentioned in XIII century for the first time. This building is from the XVIII century.

Taking a turn into Saint John street

That little "towers" are popular in bigger Silesian cities but in Rybnik I think this one is the only one.

And here it comes: the old church. First mentioned in XIII century, this building comes from 1798-1801.

Just next to the church a middle-school is located.

Let's go more north.

Rudzka Street leads to the medieval Rudy Abbey about 15 km north from Rybnik. But we stay in the city.

Current Campus was a hospital previously.

Campus is composed of: Silesian University, Silesian Technical University and Katowice's University of Economics.

Although Rybnik hasn't got its own university, almost 5,000 people study here.

Let's continue our Rybnik trip. Unfortunately, my Photobucked account has excessed limit and I had to relocate all the photos to facebook. I hope they are visible.

24. Piast Street was some kind of city boundary between two world wars.

25. Saint Anthony Street. As you can see, this saint is really popular there.

26. This building is a part of a forward Rybnik's development plan, unfortunately ended by the war and not continued after it.

27. Gliwicka street is one of the oldest streets in Rybnik.

28. This Skoda driver should be taken out license! / For a few years, building owners are released from paying real estate taxes if they renovate elevations. This cause some kind of a renovation boom.

29. One of the buildings revitalised during the programme.

30. And across from it, another nice house.

31. We were here before.

32. Some nice buildings in the city centre.

33. Rynek is a main place of almost every middle-European city.

34. That orange building is probably the oldest existing one at Rybnik's rynek. It's from the XVII century.

35. Here we have: old city hall with a fountain of Saint John Nepomucen, another popular saint in Silesia - he's the patron of water and he is believed to prevent from floods. The word Rybnik itself means in Silesian dialect and Czech language a pond. The whole Silesia is very soppy.

36. Rybnik's post office at Korfanty Street.

37. Post office once again and interesting building next to it.

38. Focus Park is a large shopping mall located almost at the edge of rynek.

39. New part of new Rybnik's city hall.

40. Local court is set in a former castle.

41. This tiny green church is owned by the Lutheran community.

42. And here we have another part of old Rybnik's hospital, now abandoned. Founded by Julius Roger in XIX century, fulfilled its function till the late 90s.

43. Here's the hospital's chapel.

44. A bank headquarters and Focus Park.

45. Haller street is stepper than it looks.

46. This small yellow building was a post office many years ago.

Although the Dębieńsko coal mine was closed by the Polish government in 2000, two years ago Czech mining company NWR showed up with a new mine project. Right now they are digging new wells. Here are some photos of the mine:
