I don`t want to offend you but there is no sense of making a separate thread for Sofia`s metro because it`s still too small and doesn`t deserve so much attention.Even with the expansion which should be completed next year(possible delay till 2009), it will be still small(~17km) in comparison with the subways of the other European capitals.

Well it's nice to have a thread about the metro, but to me it's all the same, trams or subway, best get it all in the same place.

I think there was a thread about the Sofia metro already, but this was the best I found, it's good enough I think.

As to controllers. I remember once being in the bus without a ticket, and the inspector got on the bus... the guy was so drunk, he didn't even notice me, he asked my friend on the left, skipped me and asked the person on the right

well knowing how long it took Sofia to get its own, they'll start in 2049 and finish in 3050

heck, I live in New York, the 2nd ave subway was supposed to be built in the 1920s... they finally started in the 70s, dug a few tunnels, and stopped. They started again last year, and they hope to finish the first few stations in 2011. But I doubt it.

Why would Varna need a metro??? This is very unrealistic IMO. And the expenses wold far outweight any benefits.

It's a joke as to the arrogance of the Varnentzi for thinking they have the best city in Bulgaria

From time to time people or mayors would make outlandish comments, such as a metro by 2050, saying that the city will reach the million inhabitants by 2050, that there will be built 2 more bridges over the canal by 2050, and so on

Well they certainly have a very nice city, but this is a size issue...

For EE Sofia Metro is pretty good as a size. Don`t you know Warsaw Metro size for example or Istanbul`s one??

In 10 years Sofia Metro will be even large enough to compare to the largest in EE except Moscow!

It is stupid to check tens of pages to find something about the subway! Even Sofia Metropoliten is not SKGT!!!

Sofia Metro is about to be enlarged very soon and now is the time of posting many pictures from the construction works, renders etc.

I still think it deserves it`s own thread!

Metro in Varna is a stupid idea IMO. But what about an urban rail system that goes to Golden Sands and the resorts in Northern direction? I think that's a very good idea. It could have a station near the Varna airport.

I don`t think it`s stupid!

It would be partly S-Bahn and partly U-Bahn in downtown for example.

Varna is booming!

Bgrs, do you support my idea for a new metro Sofia thread?

Who's gonna fund that? Varna is at sea level, it would be extremely expensive to pump underground water and dig tunnels, reinforcing them. Besides, Varna is only 350k, let's say it comes close to 400-500k in the summer. Thessaloniki has nearly 1 million inhabitants, Greece is richer than Bulgaria and still they don't have a subway.

maybe there should be a separete thread about the metro when they FINALLY finish this extension and start the second diameter. that seems reasonable to me. because the one we have now can hardly be called a real metro.

The second diameter will be started before the end of extension AFAIK.

Yes, the construction starts in 2008, the extension to Mladost will be opened in 2009 and God knows when is it going to reach the BPS and the airport.

of course i've read that info but i will remain a sceptic till it becomes reality. i heard that it is supposed to reach the airport in 2012-13 or sth like that. does anyone know if it is going to go overground after leaving Druzhba?

It will get overground twice (if the drawing I saw in a newspaper is correct) - in the beginning of Druzhba near Tsarigradsko and in the end of Druzhba in Airport direction. But I heard some speculants are selling their plots at very expensive prices and that's kinda problem. The procedure is delayed due to that and still the plots are not bought back by the Sofia's municipality.
