I EXCLUDE Scottish Premiership matches played Dec 27th-Dec 28th as these were a separate round of fixtures, there already being a full programme over the weekend.

Figures are as follows
880,801 – All four English divisions, 46 matches
104,904 – All four Scottish divisions, 19 matches
16,853 – Northern Ireland Premier, six matches
2,428 – Welsh Premier, six matches

That’s a total of 1,004,986 for all UK senior league matches
That's pretty impressive. Rugby pales in comparison to soccer in England and Scotland, especially outside the top tier, but also pulls in its highest crowds at Christmas.

Aviva Premiership - 156,543 (average 26,091)
RFU Championship - 13,131 (average 2,189)

Pro12 (in Scotland) - 21,036 (average 21,036)

Pro12 (in N Ireland) - 17,163 (average 17,163)

Pro12 (in Wales) - 31,168 (average 15,584)
Principality Premiership - 6,396 (average 1,066) (2 results with no attendance figures)

What always strikes me about Europe is how every other sport bar soccer has really underwhelming attendances. To the point where anything over 10,000 is considered great.

I'm still very muchin favor of continental leagues in Europe for all sports. Basketball has done it. Others need to follow suit.

A slightly dubious claim was made in the media this week that the 6 Nations is the best attended sporting event in the world. There's a grain of truth to it but obviously some massive caveats.

I think you're thinking about domestic leagues rather than big sporting events per se. You're correct that only soccer seems to be able to draw big crowds to domestic matchups between club teams but other sports draw big crowds for other kinds of sporting events. Motor sport, horse racing, cycling even winter sports can draw huge crowds for the big events but these don't fall into the context of leagues or teams. Then there's sports like Rugby Union where matches between national teams get big crowds but regular club games don't so much.

Incidentally, you mention that basketball has a continental league but this competition the Euroleague runs alongside the domestic leagues with teams playing in both. This is exactly the same as how soccer's Champions League and rugby union's Champions Cup work. I think Ice Hockey also has a similar set up. I am not aware of any team sport in Europe where clubs compete exclusively in a continental level competition. I can only think of the slightly dubious example of Rugby League's Super League, which is theoretically a pan European league but features just one team from outside the North of England.

Dortmund and Bayern will be over the million now. They have both played at home since that tweet (Feb 3).
