Buffalo: What a Day!

All the shots below were taken on January 11 in and around Buffalo. They range from sunny shots with deep blue skies to gloomy shots through drizzle to dark shots that are blurry because I couldn't hold the tripod steady in the wind.

I hate to see the old stuff go, but we have had years and years to use it...and if we have failed to act on it, and someone wants to develope the land, not the building...then I guess it should come down.

it's not the same Buffalo we all read about and know from History, this is a new Buffalo.

Great shots WSJ, great.

I think we are more to blame than the Senecas for the demolition and delapidation of buildings in Buffalo...we are the ones who killed the city...and the state. WE being New Yorkers who keep supporting the same clowns in Albany by voting.

I know you're all wondering "gee, what does WestSideJohn think of the casino" so I'll end the suspense and tell you. Casino gambling is currently illegal in New York State. In my view that leaves us with two options.

1. say "oh well, it's illegal" and forget the whole thing.
2. amend the state constitution to make it legal, and operate the casino so that we receive 100% of the profits instead of 5% of the profits from the slot machines.

Notice that I'm not even getting into the discussion of whether casino gambling is right or wrong or moral or immoral. I'm looking at it from a practical point of view. Why should we cede land to another sovereign nation and get mere pennies on the dollar?

"But John" you say, "the government has no business operating a casino." Well, that's a valid point, and in a perfect world I'd agree, but I'd say think of this like an extension of the lottery. If it's going to be a cash cow, I say let it be our cash cow.

Did you know that taxpayers (state and county) have spent over $150 million since 1990 for improvements on Ralph Wilson stadium? And what do we get in return? Not a whole lot. For less money we could have built a casino which would create more jobs and make more money.

But it's not even Buffalo at all, is it. It's the Seneca Nation. It is not ours. we have allowed our state to give away land in our city to another nation. That is not New Buffalo. At least I certainly hope not.

This is how the gov'nor thinks: "Let's see... we could use some cheap power, but theres a moratorium on Nuke plants. I know! I'll just sell some unused land in crappy Buffalo to the Iranians and let them build a Nuke factory!"

I don't know what you mean when you say, "we receive 100% of the profits".

Anyway, if you're going to have gambling in the state make it so that anyone can open and run a gambling establishment. Just like anyone can open a restaurant if they meet health and safety regulations.

"We" means whoever wants to build and operate a casino, whether that is municipal or private. I don't necessarily believe the government should be running a casino, but if taxpayers are going to give tens of millions of dollars to sports franchises and get NOTHING in return, then I have no problem with building and running a casino and raking in the profits.

I love the speculation about what this casino will or will not do...how it will kill or save Buffalo. Guys, we gotta figure out something else to talk about, this milking the casino issue is making me look more at the "Jamestown" development news.

It's there now. No lie, on either Thursday or Friday, it was 63 degrees in Rochester, so I'm guessing it was about the same in Buffalo. Yesterday this huge coldfront came through the whole eastern fourth of the country, and the high in Rochester today was 19!!!! They got a decent snow last night and all through today.

Better the Seneca's should get the money than the State. Why? If the State got the money we would be lucky if we got 5% of the slot revenue. The whole amount would just get gobbled up by the State's General Fund.

With the Seneca's local municipalities get the 5% and the other 95% REMAINS in WNY with the Seneca's. They are our neighbors, much more so than residents of NYC. We (WNY) is already getting all of the profits except for the small portion staying in Albany. If the State ran them all of the profits would be sent off to NYC, probably for their public schools.
