NJ Transit Offers Free Rides for College Students

NJ Transit offers college students a free ride
29 January 2006

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - In order to beef up its ridership and cultivate new customers among the younger generation, NJ Transit this week will allow New Jersey college students to ride for free.

The offer will last from Jan. 30 through Feb. 5 and let New Jersey college and post-secondary students ride NJ Transit busses, rail or light rail lines without paying.

"We want students to discover how comfortable and convenient using NJ Transit can be," said Lynn Bowersox, NJ Transit assistant executive director. "By giving them an opportunity to ride our buses, trains and light rail lines for free, we are cultivating new customers during their college years and beyond."

In order to take NJ Transit up on its offer, students must go to the agency's Web site, fill out a survey and they will be e-mailed a coupon allowing them to ride for free. Students must present the coupon and their student ID to board.

The agency is also trumpeting its Student Pass program, which offers full-time students at New Jersey's institutions of higher learning a 25 percent ticket discount.

The universities and colleges participating include Seton Hall, Montclair State, Rutgers, William Paterson, Kean, Richard Stockton, New Jersey City, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Ramapo.
