Latics have unveiled a plan to turn their existing training ground Christopher Park into a Category 1 Football Academy and built a new training ground elsewhere.

For kids of 8-16 six training pitchs of various size including an indoor training facility, new changing rooms and other training facilities. The Club bought the training ground from the College last year (they had been leasing it since 1995) which is whats enabling them to invest in improving facilities.

This is quite cool - below is a link to google streetview, showing the southern tip of the 'bickershaw' project. (Leigh, Plank Lane)
If you swivel round you can see the pretty marina they've made and the fenced-off land for the housing development,
but the nifty thing is if you click to go down the road it will show you how crappy it looked mid-development

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=plan...08.86,,0,23.26

There used to be buildings there, that's why I say mid-development.

Well not quite that close but yes its a pity that is in Wigan borough, I suppose it messes up the strategy a bit
Slightly off-track here but how noisy will it be? Whilst at uni I spent a year living less than 100m away from the WCML and it was fine, personally didn't notice it after the first day. But perhaps that was due to deceleration (galgate to lancaster)?

Perhaps more on topic what will the journey times be for Wigan due to HS2 to brum and london?

Think I mentioned that Premier Inn had gotten the lease for the conversion of the former police HQ to hotel. The second hotel development opposite on the location of the former Tower Grand site has recieved planning permission. Six storey building incorporating 15,500 sq ft of retail space, Restaurant, 20 car park spaces, 80 bed hotel. both budget and premium hotel chains in negotiations for the lease according to the developer. Construction expected to be complete late 2014.

I'm glad this has finally been released, as I've seen a lot of it as I work for the practice (though have no involvement in the Wigan schemes). There is also a lot of work going on for an extension to the Grand Arcade but I wouldn't want to say anything until it has gone to press.

Town centre could use a daytime entertainment venue but I would have thought the indoor/outdoor market area would be far better location for it, could help anchor that side of the town centre.

Anything happening with the old town hall ?
Each time I drive past it seems to look worse.
Terrible advertisement for the town seems like it's been boarded up for ever.

The site changed ownership last or year before and the new owner pledged to do something with it but nothing immediate has materialised, the new owner did get permission to build the current temporary surfaced car park and has cleaned the site up a bit.

Besides what looks to be new transport interchange in the medium term theres talk that the indoor market may be moved into the vacant Galleries units where the old Index/original Argos was in the near future.

The Council has bought the Wigan Pier Nightclub at auction, they are refusing to say what their planning to do with the site only that it formed part of their plans for the area.

Nice the council can afford to go around snapping up properties in Wigan for mysterious development projects, after trying to close the barely funded Atherton library for years under the guise of cuts.

The vile councillor Sue Louden seems to want to take credit for ''saving'' the library when she has tried actively to close it thinking she knows best before the people who live there. It makes many choke that this town is under this Wigan borough when it it now exists to have the life blood sapped from it. Atherton never wanted to have anything to do with another town 8 (or more depending on which part of Atherton people live) miles away from it and its saving grace is that it has never had a Wigan address or postcode

Planning application from Premier Inn for signage at the former Police Station site.

More interesting is planning application A/13/78101, application by the Council and Groundworks for demolition of Wigan Pier Nightclub building and replacement with a urban linear park called Orwell Place.

Outline planning permission requested for 325 homes across approx 2/3rds the area of Wigan Enterprise Park just south of Ince station. My main issue with it is despite them integrating the flow of the existing Ince streets the only access will be from Seaman way effectivley creating a gated community accessed from Hindley rather than Ince.
