International dentistry convention in June
Tuesday May 11, 2010

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Dental Association (MDA) will be hosting its first and largest International Scientific Convention and Trade Exhibition next month.

The convention, themed New Trend, New Technology, New Impact in Dentistry, will be held from June 10 to 13 at the KL Convention Centre.

In a statement, the association said it had hosted numerous local conferences with success such as the recent 66th AGM Scientific Convention in Penang last year.

“It is our hope to elevate our conference to international level by bringing the 67th MDA AGM/World Dental Federation conference here,” it said.

The theme reflects the association’s commitment to keep Malaysia up-to-date with the world of dental development and innovations.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai is scheduled to open the conference.

KL Convention Centre unfazed by MICE competition
By Vasantha Ganesan Published: 2010/09/14
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_New...ccptr/Article/

COMPETITION for the meeting, incentive, convention and exhibition (MICE) business in Kuala Lumpur is going to be stiffer with the opening of more convention centres and hotels.

However, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre is unfazed by new entrants.

Its general manager Datuk Peter Brokenshire said that based on the 2020 tourist arrival target of 36 million set by the government, there may be insufficient capacity to cater for the MICE market.

"There is enough business for everyone. (In fact,) we don't have sufficient capacity looking at the number of tourists due to come to Malaysia by 2020 and beyond," Brokenshire told Business Times in an interview.

Coupled with working with the Malaysia Convention and & Exhibition Bureau (MyCeb), Brokenshire expects that, once it is fully operational by the end of the year, this business segment will improve.

The anticipated hotel openings in the city centre include The Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur and The Four Seasons Place in Kuala Lumpur.

Large convention space will also come from Naza's Matrade centre project.

Brokenshire said the KL Convention Centre projects to grow its revenue by 15 per cent this year, after experiencing a dip last year.

Aside from last year's drop, the convention centre has been registering operating profits since it started out five years ago and has achieved more than what it has budgeted every year.

Brokenshire explained that since conferences are planned years ahead, the events took place even during the downturn last year. "There was some shrinkage, but no cancellations."

About 55 per cent of its revenue comes from the domestic market and the rest, international.

The KL Convention Centre is owned by Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Bhd, and operated by Convex Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

Convex is a 49:51 joint venture between Australia's Ogden International Facilities Corp Pte Ltd and KLCC Holdings Sdn Bhd.

"Malaysia remains a value-for-money destination. There are a number of things that make it a desirable destination. Event organisers are blown away by the packages we have here," Brokenshire said.

"The strength which Malaysia has is that it is a politically stable country. And in terms of security, Malaysia's ranking is high. This is important for conference organisers.

"There is still solid interest in Kuala Lumpur, and Malaysia. As we become better known in the international and regional meeting facility for delivering on the promise, Malaysia will become more successful in securing these events."

The pull factor at the KL Convention Centre is its location next to the Petronas Twin Towers, three hotels in the vicinity, shopping, a philharmonic orchestra and an art gallery.

"There are not many places that have such a vast support," Brokenshire said.

It employs 330 permanent employees and, to date, has less than 10 per cent staff turnover due to its commitment to training and development. This in turn has provided it with a loyal customer base.

"Our exhibition repeat customers is about 80 per cent. This is very high, to a point now where we have difficulty hosting request for new and larger exhibitions."

The KL Convention Centre has locked in some 30 per cent of what was budgeted for next year, Brokenshire added.

It is currently bidding for events in 2014, 2015 and 2016 in the international conference circuit.

Convention centre draws 1,119 events in 9 months
Published: 2012/10/19
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_New...#ixzz2A7FqxYpD

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre attracted a total of 1,119 events with 1.2 million delegates and visitors in the first nine months of the year.

This generated an economic impact contribution of RM407 million during the period, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Sdn Bhd said.

"This brings the number of events held at the centre to 6,322 since commencing operations in June 2005, with over 13.2 million delegates in attendance and a total economic impact contribution of RM4 billion," general manager Datuk Peter Brokenshire said in a statement yesterday.

With more than 25 major events lined up between now and year-end, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre is poised to post record sales this year.

The centre is managed and operated by Convex Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a joint-venture between KLCC (Holdings) Sdn Bhd and AEG Ogden Pty Ltd, Australia.
