Some impressions from my recent journey between Lvov, Ukraine and Budapest, Hungary
with a comfortable Ukrainian through sleeper car.
The highlights of the journey is the crossing of the Carpathian Mountains on the Erzherzog Albrecht-Bahn
and the gauge changing facility in Chop.

I did not know which photos I should not post. So sorry, its a lot of pictures.

Bombardier signs MoU to develop Ukrainian Railways' locomotive fleet

Bombardier Transportation has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) to promote the development of joint industrial activities in Ukraine. The MoU has been signed to modernise Ukrainian Railways' locomotive fleet quickly and cost-effectively.

Ukraine's infrastructure minister Volodymyr Omelyan said: “We are considering the possibility of cooperating with Bombardier in the joint production of electric locomotives in Ukraine. “The work has already begun with negotiations. We have agreed to establish a corresponding working group, which will determine the main technical and economic parameters of the new traction rolling stock fleet.”

The agreement was signed by JSC's Ukrainian railways board head Wojciech Balczun and Bombardier Transportation Locomotives' business unit head Erwin Gerber.

Gerber said: "As a global leader in rail technology, Bombardier is very proud to have been chosen by Ukrainian Railways to play an important role in their impressive transformation programme aimed at modernising and replacing their locomotives fleet. “We are very committed to contributing to the rapid and successful development of rail transport in Ukraine, which will enable deeper integration of the Ukrainian transportation network into the global transport system."

Headquartered in Berlin, Bombardier Transportation is the rail equipment unit of the Canadian manufacturer Bombardier. In Ukraine, Bombardier Transportation has its Rail Control Solutions site in Kharkiv, which provides a full range of rail control services such as design, turn-key signalling, telecommunications projects, and maintenance services. The team at the facility has successfully delivered a Bombardier EBI Lock 950 CBI interlocking system on the Krasnograd - Lozovaya Line ahead of the European Football Championships held in Ukraine in 2012.

Rare piece of history - I have just found in my house rail ticket from August 1963, used by my late grandparents on Lviv railways. Used on Khyriv-Starzhava route:

Ukrainian Railways signs agreements with Pesa and Siemens
28 Sep 2016

UKRAINE: Ukrainian Railways President Wojciech Balczun signed two memoranda of co-operation at InnoTrans 2016 on September 20.

The main aims are to create a legislative basis for Pesa and Siemens to participate in tenders called by UZ for the supply and maintenance of rolling stock and equipment, as well as potentially establishing manufacturing facilities in Ukraine. Pesa had previously supplied 11 railbuses and two two-car diesel multiple-units to UZ

Ukrainian Railways fleet modernisation plan
03 Oct 2016

UKRAINE: National railway UZ is to publish a five-year fleet modernisation strategy by the end of October, which it plans to implement following consultation with domestic and international suppliers.

The strategy is expected to include a proposal to call tenders for the delivery of between 30 and 50 modern diesel locomotives each year. UZ’s current fleet is life-expired, with it having acquired just four main line diesel locomotives and four shunting locomotives during the past 25 years

Ukraine to create stand-alone passenger business
19 Oct 2016

UKRAINE: Next year Ukrainian Railways is to begin a five-step process to form a separate passenger business. This would more clearly separate the costs of its loss-making passenger activities from the profitable freight operations, providing greater clarity in the allocation of subsidy.

UZ envisages that the assets and liabilities of its regional and long-distance passenger activities would be transferred to the new business unit between April 1 and July 1 next year, with a view to a fully-functioning structure being in place by the end of the year. The passenger business would form an independent subsidiary within the UZ group by 2020

On 23 Dec 2016 UZ lauches regular pasanger services between Kyiv, capital of Ukraine, and city of Przemysl (South-eastern Poland) using its IC+ EMUs Hyundai Rotem (made in Corea) and Ek-1 Tarpan (made in Ukraine). The total travel time will be 7 hours (for more than 600 km, including border formalities).
UZ trains will use 13 km track of 1520 mm gauge and electrified DC laid between the UA-PL border and Przemysl train station.

Ukrainian railways have extended one of their train so that now it goes from Przemyśl in Poland near the Polish-Ukrainian border through Lviv to Kiev.

At the trans-border section, it turned out to be a success. Relatively low prices and short travel time (no need to change the gauge since the 1520 mm tracks reach Przemyśl) made many people using, up to now, the combined connection with local buses Przemyśl-Medyka and Shegini-Lviv and crossing the border on foot (up to now - the cheapest and the fastest option, although with little comfort), or bus connections (long waiting time at the border and higher ticket price) choose the train.

The price from Przemyśl to Lviv at PKP is 7,10 euro. From Przemyśl to Kiev - 13,40 euro. The train departs from Przemyśl at 14:26, reaches Lviv at 17:17, Kiev at 22:33.

The return train leaves Kiev at 6:45, Lviv at 12:17 and reaches Przemyśl at 13:25.

The connection is operated using modern Hyundai Rotem multiple units.

Report in the local news of Polish state TV:

Translation of that news report:

Quote:
A new train connection from Przemyśl to Kiev started today. The trains are modern and the speed is 160 km/h. It makes the whole ride from Przemyśl to the capital of Ukraine last not even 8 hours. In addition, we avoid long queues at the border. The new connection is an effect of cooperation between PKP Intercity and Ukrainian railways.

So the first Kiev-Przemyśl train has arrived at the Przemyśl main station. The date of the first ride is not accidental - it was chosen so as to make the travel to family for Christmas easier. Tatiana, from the distant city of Sumy in north-east Ukraine, keenly used this opportunity:

"For me, it's a nice connection, it makes possible to get home quickly and in comfort."

Up to now, in order to travel 1000 km home, Tatiana needed 2 days. Now it's twice faster. But what makes the passenger most happy is the border control without having to leave the train, during the ride:

"We use so called mobile border check terminals. The officers approach the travelers inside the train and the travelers are checked in warm, comfortable conditions."

"When there was no train, we had to wait at the border, for example, 2 hours, riding on a bus from Lviv to Przemyśl. Now we can board a train and ride 2 hours without waiting at the border."

The new train, one of 10 bought by Ukrainian railways for the Euro 2012, reaches the speed of 160 km/h. Thanks to this, the travel from Przemyśl to Kiev takes about 7.5 hours. Those, who are still not convinced, the ticket prices will convince:

"The management of the Ukrainian railways decided about a special price offer. Thanks to it, the train ticket costs only 27 PLN from Lviv to Przemyśl in the second class and less than 70 PLN to Kiev."

The PKP Intercity counts on that the passengers from Ukraine will change to other trains of the company in Przemyśl:

"Arrival of the train in Przemyśl doesn't mean the end of the journey. In an hour, the "Wyspiański" train of PKP Intercity to Wrocław through Kraków departs. In Kraków, there is a possibility to change to a train to anywhere in Poland."

The new connection is supposed to increase the touristic traffic too - in both directions.

"To Lviv - it's a must! It's a beautiful city, I recommend it."

The train will go once a day: from Przemyśl at 14:26. It can take up to 600 persons.
So the border control looks like - it's fully inside the train:
