Zoo welcomes Himalayan black bears !!

ut for some stress, two Himalayan black bears that reached the city zoo on Wednesday morning were none worse for their journey of over 3,500 km by train that took nearly four days.

The bears reached the zoo after being unloaded off the Dibrugarh-Kanyakumari Vivek Express that brought them from the Nagaland Zoological Park at Dimapur.

While the female bear constantly paced the confines of the cage that brought her to the zoo and the animal house where she was released later, the male did some quick exploration, standing on his hind legs and stretching as far as possible to touch the iron grills and walls. There were ice blocks filled with grapes, watermelon, and honey to welcome the new arrivals and help them settle in.

It is only natural that the young bears, just below two years of age, get stressed, though their journey was largely by train, zoo veterinarian Jacob Alexander said. The surroundings, noises, smells, and people were all new to them, not to mention the crowd at the railway station and at the zoo to catch a glimpse of the animals.
Fears of a minor injury to the female bear proved unfounded. Fans, fruits, and seclusion did their trick, and the animals were comfortable by evening, he said.

“They will be in quarantine at the animal house for up to three weeks, so that any disease they may have manifests itself in that time, preventing its spread to other animals. Only then will they be moved for public display.”

Dr. Alexander said quarantining the bears at the animal enclosure instead of the zoo hospital would also make it unnecessary for them to be shifted again.

Dimapur and Kohima, named so to remind one of their association with the two places in the northeast of the country, have been put up in separate cages since they are yet to become familiar with each other. Only later will they be put up together for breeding purposes.

Minister for Zoos K. Raju also dropped in at the zoo to look up the new arrivals.

The bears were brought here in exchange for two Bengal tigers — Karthika and Manikantan — that the Nagaland Zoological Park did not have in its collection. A nine-member team from the zoo, including Dr. Alexander, superintendent Priyarajan, a supervisor, and six keepers — set off from Thiruvananthapuram early January 6 on what was an eventful journey that included travel through inhospitable locales in cold weather and even theft of belonging.

It caps three years of efforts to bring the bears in exchange for tigers, Zoo Director K. Gangadharan said. He lauded the support of Railways in making the journey as comfortable as possible for the animals and the team.

The zoos also exchanged a list of animals that they are interested in exchanging to widen their respective collections. Pied hornbill, leopard cat, and Burmese mountain tortoise are some of the species that the city zoo is interested in acquiring from Nagaland.

With the bears’ arrival, the enclosure that was left desolate after the death of Bhavani, the sole Himalayan bear at the zoo, promises to pulse with life again.

Hyenas to arrive at city zoo next month

The city zoo is gearing up to welcome a pair of hyenas from the Kanpur zoo before the end of next month.

Though the zoo had received approval of the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) to bring the hyenas in exchange for a pair each of white and brown rheas in April, it had to wait for the peak summer to end and the monsoon to arrive so that the exchange could be put in motion.

The zoo shot off a letter to Railways seeking its support in transporting the animals.

City zoo promoted to large category

The city zoo has been recategorised from medium to large by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA). The zoo, which used to be a large-category zoo years ago, is now restored to that category.

An order from the CZA said its technical committee had recommended the re-categorisation under Rule 9 of the Recognition of Zoo Rules, 2009.

Categories

The order, dated November 21, said recognised zoos in the country were classified into large, medium, small, and mini on the basis of area of the zoo, number of visitors, total number of species and animals, total number of endangered species, and animals of endangered species. A large zoo had to be 75 hectares in area, and have 7.5 lakh visitors in a year, 75 species, 750 animals, 20 endangered species, and 100 animals of endangered species.

The city zoo, though falling short in the area criterion (it is situated on 14.56 ha), meets other criteria as per information provided by it and the annual animal inventory for 2016-17. During the year, it had 11.82 lakh visitors. It has 75 species, 947 animals, 37 endangered species, and 206 animals of endangered species.

All kudos to our Former Director K. Udayavarman who played a key role in bringing wide range of species to our zoo and the development of other required infrastructure.

His efforts led to the promotion of the Zoo to large category

Sadly present regiment has completely ignored the further development of the zoo.
