Several road development projects are being under taken in the city. The major one being the development of 42 kms of city roads under PPP on annuity basis. This thread will discuss/showcase about the development in road infrastructure.

Thanks for the clarification. So this is a flyover that will go over the highway. Although it was mentioned earlier as an underpass, I did wonder whether it really was an underpass, looking at a construction picture, they were building up and not digging downwards.
I think you got them mixed up. Underpass is not always underground, it just means a passage below another one. It could be underground if the overpass is at ground level, or can be at ground level if overpass is above ground level. It can be a mix of both as well. venpalavattom is a water logged area, and an underground passage is not viable always

Hmm interesting.... so finally what is staying at the ground level here, the highway or the Kochuveli- KIMS road :?

Fund allotted for change of alignment? Do you know for what purpose the funds were alloted and by whom?
Trivandrum is a district with very low SH density. Why can't they change more roads to SH?

State Highway 60 is just 7 KM. If they want to stretch MC road to Kazhakuttam, why can't they create a new SH from Kesavadasapuram to Kalayikkaavila? That would be a full 4-6 lane highway.

Another good candidate for SH is Varkala - Kallambalam - Kilimanoor road.

NHAI approves design of flyover

Thiruvananthapuram: Finally, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has given approval for design of the flyover at Kazhakoottam. Now NHAI will start tender proceedings for works of the flyover from Kazhakoottam to Technopark.

The NHAI has approved the general arrangement drawing of the flyover last week. The total length of the flyover is 2.34km. It will be 20.5 metres wide. There will be pillars in every 30 metres. Sources in NHAI said that the flyover will start from the stretch near the Kazhakoottam police station and end near Technopark phase III road.

It was during the foundation stone laying by Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari two years ago, that the proposal of a flyover at Kazhakoottam-Technopark stretch came up. The minister immediately accepted the proposal. However, the NHAI later announced that the project will be taken up as a standalone project.

Unlike the airport approach road, which will be awarded to the KNR Constructions, contractor of the NH widening project, the Kazhakoottam flyover will have a separate tender.

Sources in NHAI said that they are preparing the estimate of the project and would soon invite tender.
They said that the proposal of flyover was accepted considering the anticipated increase in traffic to Technopark. However, the flyover will cater to the needs of vehicles in the national highway.

"A vehicle coming from Attingal and moving towards Kovalam can take the flyover route so that it won't get disrupted by traffic in Technopark side. The road underneath can be used by local traffic, including those to Technopark," sources said. More than 50,000 employees work in Technopark. Majority of them use their personal vehicles for commutation, thus resulting in heavy traffic block at NH during peak hours. Technopark is widening its main gate considering the changes in the NH. It has also constructed a widened road for its phase III campus. Lack of footpaths will be one of the major flaws in the stretch.

Next major stalemate for the project is the approach road to airport. The centre is yet to approve the design of the airport approach road. The work in the Chackai-Enchakkal stretch was stuck due to delay in getting approval for the approach road.
