National colloquium on 100 years of crystallography



The Kerala State Council for Science, Technology, and Environment (KSCSTE) is organising a “National colloquium on 100 years of crystallography” here from February 7 to 9 to celebrate the discovery of the branch of science that has since been extensively used to study molecules and design drugs.

The colloquium is expected to provide a platform for chemists, biologists, and physicists all over India to interact and discuss the latest happenings in crystallography.

A pressnote issued by KSCSTE said about 100 participants representing senior scientists, young scientists, research scholars, and selected postgraduate students had been invited for the colloquium.

M. Vijayan, Indian Institute of Science (IISc); Krishan Lal, president, Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi; M.R.N. Murthy, IISc; T.N. Guru Row, IISc; Ashwini Nangia, Central University, Hyderabad; S. Mande, National Centre for Cell Science, Pune; T.P. Singh, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi; P.K. Bharadwaj, IIT, Kanpur; and M. Haridas, Inter-University Centre for Biosciences, Kerala; are among those expected to participate.

Signs festival from February 10 to 15


The 7th edition of Signs Festival, the pioneering fete in India for digital videos featuring national level competition for documentaries and short fiction, will be held in Thiruvananthapuram from February 10 to 15.

About 150 documentaries and short fiction films would be screened during the six-day event to be held at two veneues, a release from Federation of Film Societies of India, the organisers of the festival, said here today.

Last date for submitting application in the competition section for the prestigious John Abraham National Awards for documentaries and short fiction is January 10.

A workshop on 'Free and Open Source 3D animation software' along with a package of blender films from all over the world would be an added attraction of the festival.

City all set to host Natyotsav-2013



The Natyotsav-2013 organised by Guru Gopinath Nadanagramam will kick off in the city on January 10, promising a cultural extravaganza showcasing traditional dance forms by more than 100 dancers. The dance fest will be inaugurated by Minister for Culture K C Joseph at Theerthapada Mandapam on Wednesday evening.

From January 10 to 12, Theerthapada Mandapam will host the event, while Nadanagramam will host the fest on January 13 and 14. The fest will have artists from across the country presenting Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Manipuri, Kathakali, Keralanadanam, Mohiniyattam, Ottan Thullal and Nangyarkootu.

The inaugural function will be attended by Ministers V S Sivakumar and A P Anil Kumar, Mayor K Chandrika and K Muraleedharan MLA.

Natyotsav will begin with Keralanadanam, while the next day, artists will perform Mohiniyattam and Bharatanatyam. Piyali Banerjee and Parimita Paul from Kolkata will present Manipuri dance. On the January 12, the fest will showcase Ottan Thullal and Kuchipudi by Sreelakshmi from Bangalore.

The next day, Iswariya Warrier from Gujarat will present Mohiniyattam and Thiruvananthapuram Margi will present Dakshayagam Kathakali. Margi Usha will present Nangyarkoothu on the concluding day, while Veena and Dhanya from Mumbai will perform Bharatanatyam.

Science education and research to be theme of Kerala Science Congress


'Science Education and Research' will be the theme of the 25th edition of Kerala Science Congress, organised by Kerala to be held here in Thiruvananthapuram from January 29 to February 1.

Being organised by the R&D Centre of the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment and Technopark, the theme is in keeping with India's aspirations of becoming a knowledge based economy.

Chief minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the Congress at Technopark here on January 29, President of Kerala Science Congress Prof. V.N.Rajasekharan Pillai told reporters here today.

In a bid to evaluate its contribution, the Congress from this edition on would have a dedicated session to analyse its prospects and retrospects.KSCSTE has constituted a committee to study the impact of KSC in the last 3-5 years.

Pillai said former Executive Vice Presidents and Chairmen of STEC and KSCSTE would discuss and debate the committee's technical report in this year session's titled 'Prospects and Retrospects of 25th KSC.

Another attraction is an exhibition titled 'Sasthra Jalakam- The National Science Expo', involving participation of major R&D organizations, S&T Institutions and industry. It will also host a 'Students Science Exhibition' and 'People Science Pavilion'. To be held at Kanakakunnu Palace here from January 28 to February 3, it will be open to the public.

A day-long session on 'Mathematical Sciences' and a special session on 'Science education and communication in Malayalam'' are other important aspects of the Congress. Science Literature Awards announced by KSCSTE this year will be distributed by Chandy at the inaugural, he added.

French conversation workshop
A French ‘conversation workshop’ is being organised at Alliance Française de Trivandrum on January 17 from 6 to 7.30 pm. The monthly workshop is aimed at providing a platform to practice spoken French and in intended for those who have done basic courses in French.

The workshop will be animated by a French native speaker with role plays, interactive session, discussions etc. This session will have activities focusing on expressing feelings and emotions. Entry is free.

The 25th Kerala Science Congress, organised jointly by the Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), its associated centres and Technopark, will be held in the city from January 29 to February 1, 2013. A national science expo - Sasthra Jalakam - will also be organised alongside the Congress at Kanakakkunnu Palace from January 28 to February 3.
