It may bring more people to the area... they just won't come back. I agree with most of what Sunny D says. But at the same time I don't even think it's worth discussing. It is what it is.

I'm not so sure - as improvement takes place to the north, west, south and even east of Rusholme (albeit at a glacial pace, and I don't include Longsjght in that!), the district stands out more and more like a sore, neglected thumb.

Also, given it's astride one of the main routes into the city, what sort of impression is it making for visitors? Vibrant, lively, cosmopolitan? No - a slightly seedy dump.

MCR wants to compete alsongside the Bilbaos and Montreals of this world, especially in HE - imagine some rich kid from Hong Kong coming to check out cities and being shown rented accommodation on Hibbert St? Crazy.

Now I'm not convinced entirely that we should be pimping our educational facilities for wealthy foreigners while our own kids get priced out of the market - but if you're going to pimp them, at least do it properly.

And that means public realm in Rusholme (and all the other issues) needs sorting out.

Why would a rich kid from HK view a house on Hibbert street? They'd go straight to the incredibly expensive city centre student halls which are built for them.

I think Manchester is crying out for a pleasant, dare I say, wealthy, residential area near the city centre/universities, but a city needs grit like Rusholme too for me. I'm pretty sure Bilbao and Montreal will have similar areas.

Also it's not one of the main route to the city. Cars/Coaches from the south all go up Princess Road/A6 and bypass it completely. If you live in Didsbury/Withington/Fallowfield then it's on your way into Manchester.
