San Diego and Tijuana make joint proposal to host 2024 Olympics

Quote:
By Houston Mitchell
April 26, 2013, 11:10 a.m.

U.S. Olympic Committee Chief Executive Scott Blackmun said Friday that he is talking to 10 cities about a possible bid for the 2024 Summer Games and mentioned an intriguing pairing: A joint proposal from San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico. “We're in discussion with about 10 cities actively now,” Blackmun said. “The process is really working the way it was supposed to.”

When asked specifically about the San Diego/Tijuana bid, Blackmun said, “That would have its challenges. We haven't looked at it carefully. We just learned about it.”

Los Angeles, Philadelphia and San Diego/Tijuana were the only cities Blackmun specifically mentioned, saying the other candidates preferred to remain confidential for now. The U.S. hasn't hosted a Summer Olympics since the 1996 Atlanta Games. The IOC is to select the 2024 host city in 2017.

“We've got plenty of time,” Blackmun told the Associated Press. “There are no specific deadlines on this process.”

A San Diego/Tijuana joint bid brings up some questions: Would the IOC grant the Olympics to two countries that have hosted the Games on their own? How would the border crossing for athletes and fans work?

Awesome! I also heard that D.C.-Baltimore are also bidding on the 2024 Olympics.

Oh well...

USOC Shoots Down S.D./Tijuana Joint Bid Over Rules Forbidding Cross-Border Bids

Quote:
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- A cross-border bid for San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico, to host the 2024 Summer Olympics appeared dead before arrival Tuesday when the U.S. Olympic Committee said international rules don't allow two countries to mount a joint candidacy.

The news was delivered as San Diego Mayor Bob Filner and his Tijuana counterpart, Carlos Bustamante, prepared to name a cross-border planning committee within the next week and unveil a logo.

Scott Blackmun, the USOC's chief executive, said Friday that the committee was talking to 10 cities about a possible bid, including San Diego-Tijuana. He said the committee hadn't looked carefully at the cross-border proposal but that it would "have its challenges.''

After more research, Christopher Sullivan, the USOC's chief of protocol and bids, called Filner's liaison to the committee on Tuesday to say the International Olympic Committee charter doesn't allow for bordering countries to host Summer Games, said USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky.

"There's no opportunity for them to bid together,'' Sandusky said.

Filner said he was "undaunted.''

"The true spirit of the Olympics embodies my conviction that we should vigorously pursue the dream of having two countries host the Olympics in the greatest bi-national region of the world. Rules and bylaws can be changed,'' he said.

A spokeswoman for Bustamante, Martha Saldivar, didn't immediately respond to a message.

They already knew that. I don't know why they keep insisting on bidding with Tijuana. That would never happen, San Diego is too small to host the games. It doesn't have the infrastructure to host such event. Public transportation is a major problem that San Diego could face if they decide to bid alone.

I would have imagined most of the stadiums and venues being in Mexico where the national government is able foot the bill. Athletes could stay in new housing in San Diego. Win. Win.

IMO the real problem is the IOC and their retarded rules about cross-border bids. Screw those 19th Century shitbags!

On a brighter note, it looks like Sempra Energy is ready to make the jump:

Sempra favorable to moving?

Quote:
Sempra Energy may be leaning toward moving out of its headquarters to a new building downtown.

Jason Hughes, a downtown broker and unpaid real estate consultant to Mayor Bob Filner, blogged this week that Sempra had informally notified its landlord, Sandor Shapery, that it was intending to move from its location at 101 Ash St, where it or its subsidiary, SDG&E, has been since 1968.

Sempra spokesman Doug Kline said the company is still mulling its options and has not made a formal decision.

Shapery said it was up to Sempra to make the announcement.

"The communications are leaning in that direction (of moving) but they haven't specified what project they're looking at the hardest or if they have decided on a specific project," Shapery said.

The most talked about option is the block bounded by J and Island, Seventh and Eighth Avenues, just north of Petco Park, where Cisterra Development has proposed a 14- to 16-story building of 280,475 to 323,075 square feet.

Cisterra CEO Steven Black said he is not free to discuss the state of negotiations but noted the proposed building, designed by Carrier Johnson + Culture, has been configured specifically for Sempra.

The North Parker

Quote:
Jonathan Segal’s The North Parker is coming to 30th and Upas, and here’s a rendering out of the San Diego Business Journal (account required). The project includes 4 retail suites totaling 6000 square feet, 27 2-bedroom rentals, and office space that will house Segal’s architecture firm. The design is reminiscent of Segal’s black building on India Street in Little Italy.

preserving it means - don't climb on it!!! Sometimes I am amazed by the sheer stupidity of people.

Indeed! My understanding is that the current central library is scheduled to close in June, and the new one is scheduled to open in September.

Stone Brewing has opened their second restaurant and brewery at the old Naval Training Center (Liberty Station) in Point Loma. The restaurant is located in Building 1, constructed 1922, formerly the NTC Commissary. Prior to the commissary, this building held the main mess hall and galley for many years.

Stone isn’t just for Sundays anymore! A couple years in the making, Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens will finally be opening their new Liberty Station spot (likely within the next week or two), making the full Stone experience a lot more accessible to us city folk. (Escondido will become all the more inviting again once their hotel opens.) We got a sneak peek during their pre-opening celebration, and like their Escondido bistro, the space is sprawling! We were told by a staff member that this will be the largest restaurant in San Diego county – we honestly haven’t yet fact checked whether that’s true, but rumor or not, it’s certainly believable.

The 22,000 square-foot restaurant and brewery consists of one acre of landscaped gardens and outdoor space (including a beer garden, a bocce court and an outdoor movie theater, all separate from each other), two large indoor main dining areas, really sweet banquet rooms outfitted with projectors, water features (of course), 40 taps, a 10-barrel brewing system and a Stone Company Store. And the food is local, with produce grown on their own Stone Farms in Escondido.

The garden is still very much under construction, but moving quickly. It’s looking like once that’s ready to go, Stone will be ready for us! As far as the staff is concerned, those guys are definitely ready. The high level of friendliness, helpfulness and pride these ladies and gentleman showed us is a pretty rare thing to encounter.

Check out the photos of where things stand currently:

Out the windows on the left side of this banquet room is the bocce court. On the right is the movie screening patio.
