Wonderland Amusement Park

Brand new to this forum, tried posting this particular thread in a different section but probably put it in the wrong place.

Am trying to find something/anything on the old Wonderland Amusement Park which (if my memory serves me correctly) used to be near the National Stadium vicinity.

Anyone with any pictures, info, stories, recollections, etc to share about this place?

Cheers
danny

Hi,

Thanks for the links, but I'm definitely not referring to any of the Worlds.....Wonderland was around during the 60s & 70s, located around the Kallang/Mountbatten area - I'm sure someone out there must have some recollection of this place.

Any pictures would be especially appreciated as I've been googling endlessly for the last few months and havent managed to find anything.

yes it's not one of those "XXX Worlds". It was in the early 70s at the present site of Kallang MacDonald 24-hour outlet. It had joy rides similar to Great World. It was fenced up with red zinc roofed type. Popular with Bedok Camp NS boys (3 and 4 SIR) in those days because you either patronized the "Joo Chia Seng Po Po Bar" (corner shop shouse opposite to the community center)) or this place during your night-off (ilel back in camp by 2359 hours).

I think the owners; due to business pressures, moved to East Coast Macdonald when it was first opened in the early 80s.

I am looking also for those kind of pics.

That's new to me. Well, I did not exist in the early 70s.

Kew56, thanks for joining the forum and sharing your knowledge with us here.

Wonderland Photos

I got 2 photos to remind of the past. Pictures taken in late 1970s. Can someone tell me how to insert the image into my reply?

The actual site are the car-parks opposite to Kallang Theater and Indoor Stadium......i.e. opposite Shop & Save Supermarket and Palm Beach Sea Food Restaurant

wonderland amusement park

If anybody can remember East Coast MacDonald, the present site where the old amusement attractions stood was used fby radio-controlled car hobbyists. Then the Wonderland amusement attractions came to replace the radio-controlled car race circuit. That was in early 80s.

Fantastic stuff Kew, where did you get those shots from...? And do you have any others of the place? I think they gave those 'Ovaltine cups' a fresh lick of paint in later years, but they were definitely one of the must-go attractions of the day

I think wonderland , happy and gay world are all the same amusement park. I find some of the pictures to share.

Greatworld amusement park 1956

Whenever a Trade Fair was held, a ray of white light will be beamed from Great World into the night sky and could be seen from miles away.

New “Made-in-Singapore” products were launched at the Trade Fair; with special offer and free gifts. There were 4 cinemas in Great World – Sky, Globe, Atlantic and Canton, all owned by the Shaw cinema magnates. Sky and Globe screened films in English while the shows in Atlantic and Canton were usually in Mandarin or Cantonese.

There were times when Atlantic would screen 2 “third-run” Chinese films for the price of 50 cents during day shows.“Third-run” means that these films have been screened in the major cinemas in town as new or “first-run” films several months earlier at “first-run” ticket price of $2.50 each.

The amusing stuff of Great World as an amusement park are the kiddie joy rides (outdated compared to the funland machines today). The “ghost trains” was most popular. (It was not scary at all because the ghost effigies were made of papier-mache and attendants were walking around the “ghost town” to push the carts which are jammed in the rail). The ride will only frighten those who kept their eyes closed; not those who dare to open their eyes throughout the ride and found it fun and amusing.

There were also the carousel, merry-go-round aeroplanes, mini roller-coaster, and motor-engine operated joy rides with simple, unsophisticated designs and features. The rides were usually priced at 20 or 30 cents each.
