Honda to export from Ennore

http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/...ue&ref=wl_home

Quote:
Japanese car maker Honda is next in line to use the Ennore port for exports with the first shipment of nearly 400 vehicles expected to leave the port next week.

The company is already using a port in Gujarat on the west coast for exports, and will now test a port on the East Coast for the first time.

Honda will move its vehicles from its Gurgaon plant by road using car carriers and then ship it through the Ennore port for South Africa and Seychelles, according to a senior port official who did not wanted to be quoted. “We expect the first Honda shipment to be on April 17 or 18,” he said.

Recently Honda officials visited various ports, including Ennore, Karaikal and Chennai, for exports before zeroing on Ennore, which they said, was a ‘clean port,’ he said.

Other vehicle manufacturers such as Nissan, Toyota, Ford and Ashok Leyland are already using the port for exports.

According to sources in Ennore Port Ltd, recently Honda officials conveyed their plans to export around 400 cars in the first consignment. “They have given us a letter on using the port; we are ready to handle any volume,” said a senior port official who did not want to be quoted.

INCREASING VOLUME

The Ennore port handled a record 1,45,053 automobiles through the general cargo berth as against 1,25,000 vehicles in the previous year. The port is now handling almost half the volume of the Chennai port, which handled 2.75 lakh last financial year.

R Senthil Kumar, General Manager, EPL, said that port constructed the berth at a cost of Rs 140 crore. The berth was commissioned in January 2012 and can accommodate 8,000 cars. The berth has a car parking yard for 10,000 mid-size cars.

The port has the largest car parking yard in the country with provision to park around 12,000 at a time. With the growing demand for car exports, the port plans to construct another yard to accommodate nearly 3,000 cars, he said.

The vessel’s calling at the terminal represents the line’s collaboration as a new consortium partner on the India Far East Express service.

Besides the vessel’s induction into this service, CITPL also achieved a milestone in vessel productivity on April 10 by handling 115 moves per hour during the ship’s call, completing all moves within 17 hours, says a company press release.

CITPL currently has a total of seven quay cranes (all twin lifts) and 18 rubber-tyred gantry cranes, which have more than doubled the handling capacity of the terminal.

The terminal currently caters to five mainline services to East Asia, two Colombo services and two coastal services, says the release.

Oil spill turns bonanza

Deepa H. Ramakrishnan

Fishermen used pots, thermocol iceboxes, aluminium buckets and plastic cans to remove the oil — Photo: R. Ravindran

Kasimedu residents scoop up fuel; third incident in 8 months

It was a different catch that kept many of those residing near the Kasimedu Fishing Harbour on their toes on Tuesday morning.
These days, oil pipeline leaks seem to be perceived less as a threat and more as an opportunity in North Chennai as residents rush to collect whatever they can on hearing such news. The situation was no different on Tuesday morning when reports of a green-coloured “engine oil” gushing out spread around 4.30 a.m.
The source of the leak was the 14 inch diameter underground pipeline that is 20 years old. The incident, the third over the last eight months, happened just a few feet from the water’s edge at Kasimedu.
The spot was at least 50 – 75 feet from the part of the pipeline where the leak happened. Sources said the oil had seeped underground, entered one of the underground drains and gushed up in the slush near where the boats were parked.
While this is what Parthasarathy, a fisherman, said even while giving directions to his friends to move the bathtub that had been filled with the oil, officials in the oil industry claimed that they received information of the leak only around 9 a.m.
The fisherfolk collected oil in whatever they could find, including pots, thermocol iceboxes, the aluminium baskets in which they sell fish and plastic cans.
Though oil industry officials said a team was rushed to the spot as soon as they received information, residents said response was very slow. “We just saw someone come and inform the police inspector, who was at the spot, that the leak was contained. It was only by 11.30 a.m. that a team came and started digging up the cement concrete road with an earth mover to contain the leak.
They also damaged a portion of the platform where fisherfolk sell fish. We want that to be repaired,” said Sathish, a fisherman. While digging up the ground, a sewer main was also damaged, said residents
An IOC official said that lube oil, the base stock for lubricants, was being moved along the pipeline that runs from Chennai Port Trust to Manali refinery of Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd (CPCL). The pipeline is also connected to the lube plant of IOC in Tondiarpet. The pipeline belongs to IOC
While CPCL said lube oil transfer from the refinery to a tanker at the port was completed at 8.30 a.m., the IOC official said the product was being pumped from the port to the lube plant. The lube oil, which is also referred to as base oil, is also received by tankers at the port, he said. Lubricants, he added, are made by adding additives to the base oil.
Stating that the situation was under control, the official said there was no proposal to replace the pipeline and it was being regularly maintained. Details of the leak would be known after a thorough inspection. Sources explained that several lines ran from the Chennai Port to Foreshore terminal of IOC, CPCL and BPCL. These carried naptha, furnace oil, diesel, lube oil and motor spirit and crude oil.

Cabinet okays leasing land for Chennai LNG terminal

Quote:
New Delhi, May 9 (IANS) The union Cabinet Thursday approved leasing of over 500,000 square metres land for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage and regasification terminal at Chennai's Ennore port.

"The union Cabinet has given its approval for leasing of land measuring 520,000 sq. m. of Ennore Port Limited (EPL) to the joint venture led by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) for 30 years for setting up of LNG storage and re-gasification terminal project of 5 mmtpa (million metric tonnes per annum) capacity at Ennore Port," an official release said.

The union government said the project will help Ennore port, located near the north Chennai industrial hub, to gainfully use the land and waterfront available with EPL.

According to the statement, the availability of LNG in the area will lead to sustainable industrial development and "will lead to the socio-economic development of the backward areas in and around Ennore port".

Chennai Port Trust rejects revenue-sharing offer for mega container terminal project

Quote:
The Chennai Port Trust on Monday rejected the Vadinar Terminal Ltd and Essar Port and Terminal Ltd (VOTL) revenue-sharing offer of 5.25 per cent, for the proposed mega container terminal project, and, instead, will seek rebid from the Request for Qualification (RFQ) bidders.

According to official sources, the proposed move will turn back the clock by at least 15 months, wherein five firms had evinced interest to construct the Rs. 3,686-crore project. The project has been delayed for various reasons such as poor response from the qualified bidders, economic slowdown, low revenue-sharing ratio offered by the qualified bidder and another bidder failing to get national security clearance on time.

In its last attempt, ChPT received two bids: from VOTL and Adani Port Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) for the mega container terminal. ChPT accepted VOTL’s bid as it had complied with the norms, while the unopened bid of APSEZ was sent back as it failed to get security clearance.

VOTL had offered a revenue share of 5.25 per cent slightly higher than the offer made by APSEZ in the earlier attempt. Unhappy with the revenue-sharing pattern, ChPT officials asked VOTL to increase the bid.

Meanwhile, APSEZ represented to the Shipping Ministry, expressing concern over the delay in getting security clearance, even though they were one of the major port operators in the country. The Shipping Ministry, in turn, approached the Union Home Ministry and asked ChPT not to award the project to VOTL. The security clearance for APSEZ was accorded recently.

“As we had already sent back the bid of APSEZ, we did not want to accept it. The revenue share offered by VOTL was low and we asked them for an increase. However, they have replied that they have given the highest bid and were not in a position to offer more than that. Hence, the board rejected VOTL’s offer and will invite RFQ firms to rebid. The RFQ was issued in 2010 and Requests for Proposal in January 2011. The security clearance of APSEZ was pending for more than a year. We have lost significant amount of time,” the official said.

ChPT Chairman Atulya Misra said the board has decided to seek fresh bids from the five RFQ bidders, as the last bid could not be completed. Now the bidder has to quote above 5.25 per cent as revenue share.

All the five RFQ bidders have got security clearance from the Union Home Ministry, he added.

Ennore LNG terminal is very important for industrial progress of TN.

But i feel 5Million tonne is too less. Why dont we plan like Dahej gujrat - start with 10 million tonne?

And why cant present CM also start planning for a state level gas grid (something where previous CM utterly failed to focus on)
