Chancery House apartments approved 7 Jan 2015, 11:12 Chancery House on Paradise Street in Liverpool city centre, formerly the Gordon Smith Institute for Seamen, is to be converted into 37 flats and a restaurant following planning approval by the local authority. The project was designed by architects Falconer Chester Hall for client, Chancery House LLP, a Cumbria-based property consortium. The apartments will be a mix of one, two and three-bedroom properties above 9,000 sq ft of commercial space on the ground and mezzanine level. Adam Hall, managing director of Falconer Chester Hall, said: "Chancery House occupies an outstanding location between Liverpool ONE and the burgeoning creative quarter in the Baltic Triangle. "This conversion will contribute to the vitality of the city centre through its commercial uses and provide excellent living accommodation in the heart of the city." A two-storey rooftop extension will be created on the Hanover Street corner of the building, with a new six-storey link building erected on the existing car park behind Chancery House. "The design of the extension and new building, together with the colour palette and cladding materials chosen, will reflect the existing collection of distinctive buildings in the location," added Hall. Chancery House was built more than a century ago to provide assistance to seamen who had fallen on hard times. - See more at: http://www.placenorthwest.co.uk/new...apartments-approved.html#sthash.RVGonj0c.dpuf

Look inside Liverpool’s new ‘posh fish and chips’ restaurant

Take a look inside a new upscale fish and chips restaurant opening in Liverpool.

George’s Great British Kitchen, a family-run chain with restaurants in Newcastle, Nottingham and Leeds, is set to open soon on Paradise Street.

Located in Chancery House, the new eatery will serve up a range of British classics including of course, fish and chips, alongside original dishes like the ‘Proper Dirty Double Burger’ and the ‘Slow Roasted Sticky Pork Bun’.

The new resturant also has its own gin bar where diners will be able to try out some of George’s ‘Sweet Shop Cocktails’ which include the ‘Cherry Drop’, the ‘Lemon Sherbet’ and the ‘Refresher’.

Chancery House was a winner at this year's Institution of Structural Engineers North West Awards for, 'Commendation for the Most Sustainable Project: Civic Engineers for Chancery House. Comprising the reuse and integration of a prominent landmark building, the scheme involves careful use of old and new building materials to overcome structural challenges posed by what was a tricky scheme.

Only know this as I was the structural engineer on the job and received the award!

A whole host of things!

Within the new-build section there is a large column-free space at ground floor where the restaurants are. Due to the relatively small storey heights at the upper floors we couldn't get beams to span the column-free space (crica 15m), so there is a series of very large transfer beams within the depth of the first floor that supports 5 storeys + roof. Some of these beams were around 350kg/m in weight (1m deep), so weigh over 5 tonnes each!

Lateral stability in the extension was particularly difficult as there aren't many walls that line through the building so vertical bracing is offset in a few areas. Wind loads were transferred through floor structure into offset lines of vertical bracing.

Justification of the existing structure and foundations with 2 storeys of additional structure at the Hanover St/Paradise St junction.

They are to name a few, the list goes on...
