America really built the best cities in the late 19th century.

My question is, did worthy buildings replace them? Man, what were they thinking or what better reason must they have had?

Manhattan College at 131st & Broadway

Manhattan College, 131st Street and Broadway, New York, 1866 by Jim Griffin, on Flickr

The school moved to Riverdale in 1922. The old campus was razed for a large public housing project.

Ruined Serbian Orthodox Church Was a Landmark of Old New York

Standing in ruin on Monday near Madison Square Park was not only a hub of Serbian life in New York City.

Standing in ruin was a landmark of old New York.

Standing in ruin, too, was a symbol of restless Manhattan; a spiritual home for wealthy Episcopalians, the lost souls of the notorious Tenderloin and generations of Orthodox Christians, who knew it as the Cathedral of St. Sava. Peter II, the last king of Yugoslavia, attended services there.

In this brownstone house of worship at 15 West 25th Street — now scorched and roofless after a fire on Sunday — Edith Newbold Jones was married in April 1885 to Edward Robbins Wharton.

I wonder if there were any corrupt Foreign billionaire landlords looking to make room for some prime real estate here.

Not foreign

In 2014, the Real Deal reported that Robert Gladstone’s Madison Equities sued the church for "allegedly breaching a letter of intent by not disclosing a $13.5 million bill the religious institution owed to brokerage Tenantwise. Madison agreed to help fix up the landmarked sanctuary on West 26th Street in exchange for the use of its air rights."

"Madison is looking to tap into unused air rights at the site of the landmarked church at 13 West 25th Street, as well as those belonging to the property adjacent to the church — just under 200,000 square feet of air rights in total — to construct a commercial building."

Councilmember Corey Johnson noted on Twitter, "Developer wants to build 850ft tower here."
