International departure is different, in one of my pics you will see there is a glass wall separating domestic and international departures.

Power cut leaves fliers stranded at airport

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...w/20188746.cms

On Tuesday afternoon, passengers flying into Kolkata could not fathom what was wrong at the terminal. It was only after a prolonged wait at the baggage carousals that some realized the lights were out. A few Still others

noticed that the air-conditioning system wasn't functioning. But for those bewildering 30-40 minutes, there was no attempt by airlines to inform passengers what was wrong.

The terminal went on the blink around 2pm as power supply to the facility tripped, shutting down air-conditioning, elevators, escalators, check-in counters, X-ray machines and luggage conveyor belts. This immediately halted all operations - check in, security check and baggage claim.

"A CESC supply disruption affected operations briefly. The power supply was restored in 10 minutes," said airport director BP Sharma. Though the lights returned in 10 minutes and the air-conditioning thereafter

However, the passenger check-in system and baggage carousals remained shut for 20 minutes more. Airlines resorted to manual check-in before returning to the system once power was restored.

While departing passengers learned about the power failure at the check-in counters and security check gates, those arriving in the city were clueless. IndiGo claimed it did inform its passengers about the snagthat had held up baggage

, but Go Air passengers had a 30-minute frustrating wait with no clue as to why it was taking eternity for the baggage to arrive.

Sources said the problem was due to the no frills carrier's low staff count. "Go Air has few flights out of Kolkata. Hence, its manpower in Kolkata is limited. Had a ground staff been posted at the conveyer belt, the person could have informed the passengers about the delay. But since the staff were manually checking in passengers on the onward flight, incoming passengers were neglected," an airline source said.

But couldn't airport authorities have made an announcement over the PA system once the first batch of services was restored? Sharma said an announcement would have been in order had it been a maintenance shut down. "The power went off suddenly. The priority is to restore the power and ensure that all systems are up and running again," he said.

While the power cut led to the untoward delay in reclaiming baggage on Tuesday, Sharma pointed to a false perception that was caused due to the efficient linear design of the building that allowed incoming passengers to reach the conveyer belt within a minute of disembarking from the aircraft.

"At other airports, passengers have to walk for 10-12 minutes to reach the belt. During this time, the baggage gets transported. So after reaching the belt, they get the bags within two-three minutes. Hence, the time for baggage delivery is the same. Of course, it can be brought down further if airlines are more prompt

," the airport director added.
