Khajuraho temples were constructed between 950 and 1050 A.D. during the reign of Chandel Empire. Khajuraho derives its name from the Khajur tree (the date palm tree) which can be found in abundance in the area. These temples are considered the "high point" of Indian architectural genius in the Medieval period.

Originally there were 85 temples, of which only 22 still exist. The amazingly short span of 100 years, from 950 AD - 1050 AD, saw the completion of all the temples, in an inspired burst of creativity. With the wane of the Chandela empire, these magnificent temples lay neglected, and vulnerable to the ravages of Nature. It was only in this century, that they were rediscovered, restored and granted the recognition that they justly deserve. The murals depict the life and times of the Chandelas, and celebrate the erotic state of being. They not only testify to the mastery of the craftsman, but also to the extraordinary breadth of vision of the Chandela Rajputs under whose reign, these temples were constructed. Their style of architecture was also rather peculiar to their times. Each structure stands on a high masonry platform with a distinct upward direction to their build, further enhanced by several vertical projections to simulate the effect of an overall lightness. The three main compartments are the entrance (ardhamandapa), assembly hall (mandapa), and the actual sanctum (garbha griha). The temples are grouped into three geographical divisions : western, eastern and southern.

These temples are stunning. Indeed, the temples of Khajuraho are often considered the height of Indo-Aryan architecture (as differentiated from Dravidian architecture). The temples are located in Madhya Pradesh, and are a World Heritage Site.

These temples certainly had an important task and meaning. They were made with much effort and expenses. The Chandela kings who might have ordered them to build must have had something in mind, much more than simple puja to a certain godhead.

To experience the temples you may sit outside on a temple´s platform and watch the figures and „symbols“ and see what happens inside you. And let your mind or soul react such as shouting or fighting or laughing or weeping or do some sexual practices etc. Watch a statue or group of statues for some while, an hour or day ... and watch which part or aspect of your mind or soul or body is touched by them (or not – then proceed to the next). For example you may start remembering your fear of an elephant who might have caught you and tramples on your head, or of a warrior brandishing his sword, or of a master who gives you improper orders, or you may be reminded of your erotic or sexual phantasies which are not really possible except in your mental phantasies, you may meet the Godhead of your childhood in Her/His statues and may yearn to be close with them and finally learn that there exists no personal god except in your mind. You may become angry about the social order in your village. Or about the gaurs coming out of the jungle and take away your beans and bananas.

All ths might have been a process of cleansing mind and soul before being allowed to enter the temple proper. This process might have been under the supervision of priests that were trained as psychotherapists – or rather spiritotherapists in the Tantra-sense. Cleansing the mind means perhaps to drop all artificial „ideas“ about who or what the Godhead is or who you are, what your inner duty is during puja, but instead immersing yourself in – yes in what, a newly upcoming spiritual being.

My feeling is that the temples were planned and designed, if not made mainly by women. There is so much feminine expression in the figures. Go into Jagadamba temple (third picture upwards from here - no that is not true, it is ChitraGupta temple), there are a few very beautiful and charming women who may allure you, „look at me, how feminine and atractive I am – and now proceed towards the Godhead and enjoy with your soul how much more beauty is in Her.“

Try to let the sharduls (those many phantastic animals with a small human on its back and another with a sharp weapon underneath) impress your mind or soul – what emerges from the depth of your past? Do the same with all those „abstract“ symbols – perhaps they are not abstract ornaments but very real fingers pointing to some inner psychic organ – and awakening it – that we are not aware of in our days.

Those temples were made by a great mass of hard working people who first of all had been tantricas with all the spiritual dayly training a tantrica gets. Their work was in an every-day tantric and meditative atmosphere. Some of these buildings have secret doorways which couples took advantage of.

I have heard that once their power was stabilized the Mogul Rulers were very tolerant. Look into Akbar´s politics.
