The park has had Sumatran tigers since the late 1970s.

However, to get a glimpse of the tigers, a visitor had to be lucky and hope that the animals were not hiding in the bush when the visitors' tram passed overhead.

Over the Memorial Day weekend all that changed with the opening of new digs for the park's six Sumatrans. The 5.2-acre Tull Family Tiger Trail cost $19.5 million and was 14 months in the making.

Visitors can now get within inches of the tigers — thanks to tempered glass and other safety features.

Children can play tug-a-war with a tiger, with the animal grasping a rope in its teeth and the child, safe behind the glass, grabbing the rope by hand. A children's play area has a log step, rope climbs and a slide, part of a simulated logging camp (rampant logging is destroying the tigers' habitat in their homeland).

The modern visitor to zoos and animal parks demands a close-up view of the animals. Numerous projects — like the new Rainforest of the Americas at the Los Angeles Zoo — are determined to provide that immediacy.

Safari Park keepers hope the new Tiger Trail will lead to greater public support for conservation projects aimed at forestalling the decline of the Sumatran tiger, considered the most endangered of six subspecies of tigers.

Court Upholds Navy Redevelopment Plan

Quote:
Plans to redevelop a key Navy property on downtown San Diego’s waterfront have been upheld once again in court.

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Miller ruled Wednesday against the California Coastal Commission, which wanted the $1.3 billion project — a partnership between the Navy and U-T San Diego publisher “Papa” Doug Manchester — to be restudied for consistency with federal coastal law.

The commission, which has 60 days to appeal, is likely to discuss the matter at its June 11-13 meeting in Huntington Beach, a spokesman said.

“We have to say we’re still looking at it,” said Mark Delaplaine, who handles federal consistency matters at the commission.

The 2.9-million-square-foot project, more than 30 years in the making, was originally intended to get the Navy a new regional office building at no cost to taxpayers.

The Mayor Wants More Houses in San Diego

Quote:
We’ve got Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s plan to address housing problems in San Diego. The big takeaway? The mayor wants more houses.

He says more homes will stabilize housing prices “so the average San Diegan can afford to buy a home.” This is a basic point about supply and demand.

But how does Faulconer want to increase supply? Mostly, the policies come in two flavors: adding funding to existing efforts to make them more effective, and the ever-popular streamlining of regulations, restrictions and processes to reduce costs. (The word “streamline” appears 20 times in the mayor’s policy blueprint.)

All told, the plan offers ideas that aren’t dramatic or revelatory changes in direction from what the city is already doing. They’re also are unlikely to elicit much fight from the Democrat-controlled City Council or other would-be opposition. Here are the main things the mayor wants to do:

- More, and Smaller, Development Blueprints

- More Transit-Friendly Building, Less Parking

- Streamline, Streamline, Streamline [the process]

When did he start going by the nickname "Papa" and why would they publish it in the newspaper?

Twin tower complex planned downtown

Zephyr Partners' $250m project marks further reboot of eastward downtown growth
June 17, 2014

A $250 million, full-block development, announced Tuesday, could dramatically remake the eastern side of downtown’s Broadway corridor.

The two 32-story towers and hotel-residential-retail project, to be developed by locally based Zephyr Partners, would be located in an area that has seen little improvement since downtown revitalization began 40 years ago.

Not only is the 750,000-square-foot project one of the biggest announced in recent months downtown, but it also would be among the first to proceed since the state abolished redevelopment agencies developers depended on to rebuild in urban centers.

“We’re very bullish on projects downtown and want to participate in the next wave of development,“said Zephyr co-CEO Brad Termini.

Zephyr closed escrow Friday for $21.1 million on the block bounded by Seventh and Eighth avenues, Broadway and C Street. The block is best known for many years as the location of the Wahrenbrock Bookhouse used bookstore.

I'm very much looking forward to the rental car operations being moved into this new facility, and more to the point, I'm very much looking forward to the current space on Harbor Island being put to a better use!

Thanks for the photos desertpunk.

These new habitats will have a maximum depth of 50 feet, surface area of nearly 1.5 acres and spanning more than 350 feet in length, offering the whales more room to swim.

Seaworld is dealing with the repercussions of the "Blackfish" documentary.
