They look like they were taken in the 70s or 80s.

Tappan Zee Bridge: Opening date Aug. 25 for one span announced, traffic patterns noted
https://www.poughkeepsiejournal.com/...ate/515782001/

Quote:
The first half of the Tappan Zee Bridge replacement will open Aug. 25.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo confirmed the date during an infrastructure-focused presentation to the Association for a Better New York in Manhattan Thursday morning.
Quote:
On the evening of Friday, Aug. 25, running into the next morning, the Thruway Authority will move all Rockland-bound traffic onto the new 96-foot-wide span. Westchester-bound traffic will stay on the bridge for "about a couple of months," the Thruway said, at which point it will shift over, too.

Once that is done, all traffic will be carried over eight lanes, four in each direction. Traffic will be separated by a concrete Jersey barrier.

Crews will then be able to work on demolishing the old Tappan Zee Bridge while finishing off the second span.

The state says the second span will be done sometime in 2018. Then, traffic will split, one span carrying eastbound traffic and the other westbound.

In this picture you can see why they are moving Rockland bound traffic irst and Westchester bound traffic two months later.

They can connect directly the Rocland bound road. But then, they have to demolish the section of that road that leads to the old bridge in order to be able to build the section of road connecting the new bridge with the lanes entering Westchester co.

paving has been ongoing. The target date seems likely.

Potentially. It was built to be much more flexible than the old bridge. If i'm remembering correctly, in the final setup each span will have 4 traffic lanes - the same as the interstate it connects. Other lanes will be relegated to emergency vehicles to improve incident response time. The northern most lane (solid line) in the current setup is where the pedestrian and bike path will be.

forgive this quick, crude paint job

The Pedestrian/bike path area is to the left of the fence you see in your picture. It's protected by the fence and a jersey wall from traffic. There's no way that the federal government will allow a bike or pedestrian way to be directly accessible from an interstate highway! In fact very obvious for safety considerations.

well of course. The point I was making is that it is currently a lane for traffic while the second span is being completed
