Brazil presidential candidate Campos 'in plane crash'

Quote:
A plane reportedly carrying the Brazilian presidential candidate Eduardo Campos has crashed in a residential area of the port city of Santos, in Brazil's Sao Paulo state.

The plane was frequently used by Mr Campos who is running for president for the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB).

Party members said he was on board at the time of the crash.

Firefighters said there were 10 "victims" but did not clarify if the 10 were injured or dead.

Friends and colleagues of Mr Campos said they were "very worried" by the fact they had not been able to make contact with Mr Santos since the crash.

PSB member Rodrigo Rollemberg said Eduardo Campos had been on board the plane along with his wife Renata, and his son Miguel.

According to Mr Rollemberg, two assistants and a film-maker were also travelling with Mr Campos.

A police spokeswoman told the AFP news agency that there were "fatalities but we still do not have a number confirmed".

Locals said the sky was cloudy and it was raining at the time of the crash.

Police and emergency workers are at the scene in Santos, which is located 70km (43 miles) south-east of Sao Paulo.

It's the sad reality of such conflicts, the propaganda machines of both sides working overtime to make the other side look bad. Which makes it even more difficult to find out what actually happened. A truly independent investigation is already almost impossible because the crash site is a war zone. With both sides spinning their truth around it will still be very difficult to find out what really happened when it does become safe enough to continue the investigation on site.

Which is very frustrating because it's pretty much clear that MH-17 was shot down by separatists without enough training to properly operate such a system and consequently mistook the Malaysian airliner for an Ukrainian military plane. It's much easier to shoot down any plane then to shoot down a specific plane. Even as a mistake it's still a crime, but it's not as political as both sides want to make it.

Hopefully time will tell what really happened, the families of the victims deserve to know the truth.

A preliminary report by the Dutch Safety Board into the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, which crashed over eastern Ukraine, has stated the aircraft broke-up in mid-air after being hit by a large number of high-energy objects, without mentioning any missile attack. The passenger jet, which was on its way to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam, was reported to have been hit by a ground-to-air missile, leaving nearly 300 dead.

Chicago flights stopped after fire at FAA facility

Quote:
(CNN) -- All Chicago air traffic was temporarily stopped Friday morning because of a fire at a Federal Aviation Administration air traffic control facility, an FAA spokeswoman said.

That stoppage included the city's two major airports, O'Hare International and Midway. Details on how long the flight stoppages would last weren't immediately available.

The fire happened at an FAA traffic control facility in Aurora, a western suburb of Chicago, FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said. One person was injured, the FAA said; further details about the fire weren't available.

Workers at the Aurora center were evacuated, Cory said. A helicopter crew with CNN affiliate WLS flew over the facility but said no flames or smoke could be seen from the air.

The flight stoppages come four months after smoke at an FAA radar facility in Elgin, Illinois, prompted flight cancellations and delays at O'Hare and Midway.

In that May 13 incident, most flights in and out of O'Hare were delayed by an average of an hour or more, and more than 600 flights were canceled, the Chicago Department of Aviation said. Some 75 flights were canceled at Midway.

The smoke in that May incident was caused by a faulty motor in an air conditioning system, the FAA said at the time.

USAF F-15 jet crashes in Lincolnshire

Quote:

A US military aircraft has crashed in a field near houses and a school in Lincolnshire.

Witnesses saw the F-15D come down in a field off Broad Gate, Weston Hills, near Spalding at about 15:30 BST.

The pilot is believed to have ejected from the aircraft and police say he has escaped with very minor injuries.

The US Air Force said the jet was from the 48th Fighter Wing based at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk and had crashed during a combat training exercise.

RAF Lakenheath tweeted: "We can confirm that one of our jets went down north of the base, in Lincolnshire. The pilot ejected and is safe."

Apparently one of the passengers on MH17 was wearing an oxygen mask.

Yep, especially on an A380 too. I wonder though if the aircraft involved had any damages...

Investigators said driver of snow plow that hit the plane was drunk and several airport staff are to be charged with negligence for failing to manage airport vehicles, not just traffic controllers but senior management as well.

Early to blame someone. First the investigators should interview everyone involved and collect evidence.
