Istanbul tunnel funding ready for first quarter

The funding for a $1.2 billion tunnel under Istanbul’s Bosphorus strait will be ready by the end of the first quarter, a group which was awarded the project said.

About $850 million of the financing will come from lenders and the rest will be equity provided by the project’s investors, said Başar Arıoğlu, managing director at Yapı Merkezi, which is leading the project.

“We are now doing the engineering study and we will begin the construction once the finance contract is completed, which we expect to close in the first quarter,” Arıoğlu said in an interview on Thurday at a conference arranged by UniCredit.

The project incorporating a 15-kilometer (9.4-mile) road with a 5-kilometer stretch of tunnel will ease car traffic on two suspension bridges joining the city’s European and Asian sides serving the 12-million population. South Korea’s SK Holdings’ SKEC, Kukdong Engineering & Construction, Samwhan, Hanshin Construction and Namkwang Engineering & Construction are working with Istanbul-based Yapı Merkezi on the tunnel.

UniCredit is advising for the project on financing. Lenders for the project include the European Investment Bank, European Bank for Restructuring and Development, Sumitomo, ING Groep, Standard Chartered, WestLB, Yapı Kredi Bank, Garanti Bank, İşbank, Türkiye Sinai Kalkınma Bankası and some South Korean lenders, Arıoğlu said.

Financial investors in the project include infrastructure funds and negotiations with them are continuing, he said. The consortium plans to complete the construction of the peripheral roads and the tunnel in 4 ½ years and operate the toll tunnel for 26 years, the executive said.

The group has also completed an environmental impact assessment, carried out by Environmental Resources Management as sought by lenders, Arıoğlu said.

Eurotunnel? Dedim ama o sadece rayli. Mümkündür herhaöde niye olmasin. Marmaray'in ilk projesinde ikisi e gececekti.

It would be just great if both Cars and Metro would run thorugh the tunnel. I want such projects, not a third Bosphorus bridge.

BTW: Any guess where the tunnel will be located?

what is possible is to construct several tubes parallel, using one for cars and one for rail/metro. It was done for the construction of the Berlin Central Station opened in 2006, which has a car tunnel and a metro tunnel running parallel to each other and exiting at the central station. It is more expensive obviously, but still cheaper than constructing both separately.

Location of the tunnel - it is supposed to run from somewhere on the southern side of the old city, i.e. between Yedikule and Sarayburnu, to Harem. UNESCO has also warned against this tunnel, as it will bring even more car traffic into the old peninsula.

They should make this tunnel between levent and maslak. Above the second bridge... instead of a third bridge. That would make more sense. Otherwise like Baron Hirsch already mentioned, the traffic at the old part of Istanbul would be horrible.

I general I prefer Tunnel projects instead of Bridges, when it come sto projects at the bosphorus.

I would also prefer a car and/or Metro tunnel connecting Maslak and Levent with Ümraniye.

İhale sözleşmesi; Demiryolları Limanlar ve Hava Meydanları İnşaatı (DLH) Genel Müdürlüğü ile ortak girişim grubu arasında Ocak 2009'da imzalandı ve onay için YPK'ya gönderildi. Yapİşlet-Devret modeli ile yapılacak projenin toplam büyüklüğü 1 milyar 75 milyon dolar.

4 YIL 7 AYDA TAMAM

Türk-Kore ortaklığı, onayın ardından en fazla 4 yıl 7 ayda tüp geçişin inşaatını tamamlayacak.

Ortaklık, tüp geçişi 25 yıl 11 ay 9 gün işlettikten sonra DLH Genel Müdürlüğü'ne devredecek. Proje, Avrupa Yakası'nın güney kesiminde Aksaray, Topkapı, Eminönü, Sultanahmet gibi yoğunluğu olan bölgelerden direkt karşıya geçiş sağlayacak. Avrupa yakasında Florya-Sirkeci sahil yolunun Kazlıçeşme mevkisinden başlayarak, Anadolu tarafında Ankara Devlet Yolu'nun Göztepe Kavşağı mevkisinde sona erecek. Su yüzeyinin 60 metre altından batırma tünellerle yapılan ve sadece trenlerin geçeceği Marmaray, dünyanın en derin su altı geçişini oluştururken; yeni tüp tünel daha derinden geçecek ve delme tünel şeklinde inşa edilecek.

GÜNDE 90 BİN ARAÇ GEÇECEK

Sadece otomobil, küçük otobüs ve minibüs gibi hafif araçların geçiş yapacağı karayolu tünel geçişini günde ortalama 90 bin aracın kullanması öngörülüyor. Ulaştırma Bakanlığı ihalede yıllık 25 milyon araç garantisi verdi. Bu sayı tutturulamazsa farkı Bakanlık ödeyecek. Geçtiği zaman ise fazla araçtan alınan ücretler firma ile bakanlık arasında bölüşülecek.
