There are still some 20 movable bridges on the Dutch motorway system, including bridges on motorways with very high traffic volumes, as Suburbanist noted.

They could be classified as follows;

* bridges in urban environments
* bridges on low-volume motorways
* bridges on busy rural motorways

Most fixed bridges in the Netherlands are built for a 9 meter clearance above high water level. It's called the 'Rhine shipping clearance'. However some water routes are 'standing mast routes', which means they need more clearance. In the Port of Rotterdam, they would need more than 60 meters clearance in case of the Europoort, for oil rigs and other exceptional ships to pass through.

There is potential to replace some bridges with underpasses (which are called an aquaduct in the Netherlands). For example A6 at Scharsterrijn and A9 at Side Canal C. However other locations are in urban areas. Some bridges open frequently, some only rarely. It would be difficult, expensive or spatially impossible to replace all of them with aquaducts. For example the Schinkel Bridge of A10 in Amsterdam (200,000 vehicles per day) cannot be replaced by an aquaduct because there is a motorway-to-motorway interchange right next to it.

The Schinkelbridge only has 'opening slots' during the night, making it one of the least problemcausing bridges.

What kind of parking lot is that in the center of the picture? According to Google Maps it is P+R Hoogkerk, but I can't see any rail line nearby only buses. Do there really hundreds of car drivers change to bus?

Groningen has a regional network of buses from P+R facilities to the city. There is another big one at Haren (A28).

P+R doesn't necessarily mean 'rail' in the Netherlands (Park& Ride).

Yeah, I know very well what it means, I simply have not seen any P+R facilities anywhere in Europe in this size having only bus connection (not considering temporary facilities connected to a special event).
Either must bus lines be very effective or car traffic/parking strictly restricted in the city forcing hundreds of drivers changing to a bus.

Hee I almost can see my house from there !
Anyhow, its pretty crowded and there are a lot of busses, in 10 minutes you are in the center of Groningen.
As a matter of fact, they are having plans to expand the parking.

A27 Merwede Bridge update

The Merwede Bridge (A27) near Gorinchem will reopen to trucks in the early morning of 9 December, after an almost month-long closure.

The bridge, designed in the 1950s for far less traffic than occurs today, suffers from fatigue. They have strenghtened the most critical parts.

They're grade-separating the bus route crossing a feeder route to the office buildings. It's pictured left of the underpass beneath the A7 to and from the P+R. From there on it's a decently fast and dedicated 'HOV' busline to Groningen Hoofdstation.

So yeah, it's only by bus, but the quality's a bit higher than your standard line.

It isn't strictly restricted in the sence you can't get to city centre or park there, you can get close enough, but the city center is a zone where it is easier tot get around by bike/bus than by car. And a zone in the real city center, the market squares, shopping district and some streets there are indeed carfree (autoluw).
Quite a big part of the town you have to pay for parking. Parking is free on P+R, you pay for the busfare alone. It doesn't take much for that to be cheaper than park in the city.
So it's used by people who commute, but also a lot by people who go shopping etc. in the city center. It's cheaper and the connections are effective.
I think there are around 3000 places on the P+R parkings at the moment and more to come.

I believe the Kardinge P+R is the largest in terms of parking spots. But isn't it a multi-use parking area, also used for the Kardinge sporting facilities? The newest satellite imagery dated 14 September 2016 (a Wednesday) shows it two-thirds empty.

traffic developments

Just recently we discussed how fast motorway traffic is growing in the Netherlands.

Here's another graph by the Economic Instutite for the Construction Sector (EIB).

Vehicle kilometers on motorways (blue) and the high growth (light brown) and low growth (dark brown) scenarios.


Not too long ago, the high growth scenario was slammed by environmental organizations for being 'unrealistic'. The government even developed a new scenario that falls between the low and high growth scenario. But traffic is growing even faster than the high growth scenario.

It is yet to be seen if the strong traffic growth continues. Part of it is a catch-up recovery from the crisis. However other indicators are favorable for high traffic growth in the near and long-term future.

* the housing market in popular cities is becoming overheated, making housing less affordable.
* mortgage requirements are more strict, people can borrow less money than before, which means they need to find affordable housing possibly farther from their work.
* the labor market has become very flexible. People don't work 40 years for the same boss anymore.
* two-income households are the norm nowadays
* these two factors make it less likely to move closer to work.
* the share of low educated workers is reducing. The higher the educational levels, the farther they typically commute to work.
* traffic growth will be particularly pronounced in the west, central Netherlands and around various select cities elsewhere.

It is, 880. And yes shared.
Average is 68% of capacity filled on all P+R.
We've got 3200 and next year city council wants 3800 places. P+R Hoogkerk on the picture in this topic get's an additional 400 places.
And on 14 september 2016? The other ones seem to be quite empty as well, maybe the weather was to good to go by car to work and to hot for shopping with 30 degrees
