Nobu-Doha at Four Seasons Hotel | APP

Exclusive first look at Nobu-Doha

DOHA: Nobu, dubbed as the A-list crowd’s favourite Japanese restaurant and recognised for its groundbreaking modern and authentic Japanese cuisine, is expected to open here in the first half of 2010, said the Doha Four Seasons Hotel’s general manager.

“The Nobu-Doha Restaurant, which will be operated by The Four Seasons Hotel, will be finished in the first half of 2010. Construction is going on at the moment and we’ve been building for two months now. It’s a pretty ambitious building from an architectural point of view and it’s quite a challenging building to build,” said Simon P. Casson, Doha Four Seasons Hotel’s general manager.

Nobu is owned by Chef Nobu Matsuhisa partnered with actor Robert de Niro, producer Meir Teper, restaurateur Drew Nieporent and managing partner Richard Notar. It has been a pioneer for Japanese cuisine in New York since its opening in 1994.

“World travellers are very familiar with the brand and it’s probably one of the world’s most recognised independent restaurants. We are really excited to bring that kind of brand, that kind of quality restaurant to Doha. It will be a combination of world-class dining and iconic-designed building in a waterfront location,” said Casson. The David Rockwell-designed building, which will enjoy a 360-degree view from its Marina location, will have three levels – the entrance level, the lobby and main restaurant level, and the sky bar.

Nobu restaurants are located in Waikiki, San Diego, Los Angeles, Aspen, Dallas, Miami, Las Vegas, Atlantis, New York, London, Berkeley St., Mykonos, Athens, Atlantis, Hong Kon, Tokyo, Melbourne and Dubai.

Designer of Nobu Doha at Four Seasons unveils exclusive project preview

Celebrated architect David Rockwell, CEO of Rockwell Group, a renowned architecture and design firm headquartered in New York, visited the Four Seasons Hotel Doha today to give an exclusive preview of his design of the Nobu restaurant at the hotel, due to open Fall 2010.

This press conference also celebrated the opening of Rockwell Group Middle East, the firm's newest satellite office in Dubai. Rockwell discussed the plans for Nobu Doha and gave the audience a sneak peak of his upcoming projects in the region.

Rockwell Group Middle East evolved from the opportunity and demand for a hub for Rockwell Group's existing and future projects in the area. It will focus on developments in the GCC, Asia, India and Africa, and will be the base of operations for its clients and design and strategy teams working in these regions.

Rockwell Group Middle East has previously developed Nobu Dubai at the spectacular Atlantis Resort on Dubai's Palm Jumeirah and is currently overseeing the construction of Aloft Abu Dhabi, Starwood Hotels & Resorts' first Middle East location of its newest select service, urban oasis hotel, slated to open later this year.

David Rockwell and Rockwell Group are designing both the interior and exterior of Nobu Doha. While exhibiting the iconic Nobu elements of natural, rich materials that reflect the cuisine and rural Japanese roots of celebrity chef and restaurauteur, Nobu Matsuhisa, this location will also reflect the specific history of Doha, and feature many one-of-a-kind art installations that Rockwell Group commissioned for the project.

As the city is famous for pearl diving, this rich legacy will be referenced in many layers of the restaurant's design. Elliptical ribbons of river stone capped with bronze accents form the exterior of the building, resembling a coiled shell and creating the three tiered levels of the restaurant.

The entrance to this restaurant is celebrated by a reflecting pool around the perimeter of the building, a bronze-clad open air atrium under the broad cantilever of the building above featuring a stacked-stone waterfall feature and a massive suspended custom sculptural installation of hundreds of pieces of iridescent porcelain made to look like fish scales inviting guests towards the monumental arced timber staircase.

On the second level is the lofty double-height main dining room framed by custom crafted woven abaca panels, columns clad in white sea shells and a field of spherical glass light fixtures of various sizes. Besides the generous terrace area with expansive views of the harbor, this level also boasts a private dining room with hand-painted murals on the curved walls with colorful graphic patterns of natural abstractions, and the White Pearl Bar with an oval-shaped bar and complementing canopy, both made of alabaster with bronze inserts.

Guests will experience a spectacular outdoor lounge with a fire pit and commanding views back towards the Doha skyline, the Corniche and the harbor from the 3rd floor rooftop. Individual sculptural resin canopies and custom globe floor lighting will provide a sense of intimacy at each of the tiered platforms of this evening lounge. Rooftop guests will also have access to the Black Pearl Bar, the inverse of the White Pearl Bar below, with similar materials but in darker hues.

David Rockwell said of the Nobu Doha project, 'Our collaboration with Nobu Matsuhisa has been one of the most important and successful partnerships of my career. I could not be more excited to bring to Doha the synergy between food and design that we have created over the past 15 years of working together.'

He continued, 'This is also a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the opening of Rockwell Group Middle East, bringing us closer to existing and future clients in Asia, India and Africa.'

Rockwell Group designed the original and flagship locations of Nobu in New York, as well as other locations worldwide such as Hong Kong, Moscow, Melbourne and Dubai.

He has also been the creative force behind such high-profile projects as the set design for the 2009 81st Academy Awards in which Rockwell Group created a fresh spatial and architectural solution for the sets and the theater that was based on storytelling, spectacle and community.

He employed a seamless synergy of technology, craftsmanship and design that was reflected in environments that combined high-end video technology, handmade objects, special effects and custom fixtures and furniture.

Mr. Simon P. Casson, Four Seasons Doha General Manager, said of Nobu's arrival at the hotel, 'Four Seasons is excited to welcome such an iconic brand to Doha. The building itself is ambitious from an architectural perspective and we are delighted to bring that kind of innovation and brand quality to Doha. Rockwell Group has designed a stunning building, inside and out, that will feature a gorgeous 360-degree view from its waterfront marina location.'

1. NOBU DOHA
Client: Nobu/Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jaber al Thani
Designer: Rockwell Group
Completion date: Autumn 2010
Size: 26,000ft²

Details: The new Nobu Doha is the second Middle Eastern venue for the world-renowned restaurant group. The freestanding, three-story restaurant will be located on a peninsula on Doha Bay, at the Four Seasons Hotel Doha. The prominent position of this new, dramatic structure will anchor the northern end of the city’s grand Corniche. While exhibiting the iconic Nobu elements of natural, rich materials that reflect the cuisine and rural Japanese roots of Chef Nobu, this location will also reflect the specific history of Doha, and feature many one-of-a-kind art installations that Rockwell Group commissioned specifically for this project. As the city is famous for pearl diving, Rockwell Group is referencing this past in many layers of the design. The lofty double-height main dining room is framed by woven abaca panels custom-made by the Philippine artist Ken Cobonpue. Featured throughout the space are end-grain wood floors, columns clad in white sea-shells and a field of spherical glass light fixtures of various sizes custom-crafted by the Canadian artist Ken Gangbar.
