decided to group these two decades naughties and the teens.
some great highrise went up and are still standing.
in sydney the first to reach 150ft was Marcus Clarks at railway Square in 1905

designed by nangle, it was nicknamed the flatiron and was sydneys most powerful building. first to introduce sprinklers and external firestairs.


these days its a backpackers. the 4m minnerets are missing. but still fine condition

first highrise to use advanced steel construction and fast passengers lifts.
exceeded height limits so 150ft was placed for next 50 years due to fire ladder limit

Commercial Travellers Association Hotel (now Rendezvous Hotel)
318-332 Flinders Street, Melbourne

The prolific H W & F B Tompkins won the competition for this building, which was completed in 1913. It was built to accommodate the once ubiquitous traveling salesman, conveniently near the railway station, and incorporated numerous grand spaces and facilities, such as the impressive domed entry hall, and large columned billiard and dining rooms (sadly now subdivided into hotel rooms). The façade, clad in striking white glazed bricks, is a successful combination of the Commercial Palazzo with the exaggerated details of the Edwardian Baroque. The hotel was built up to the 132 ft height limit in anticipation of its coming into force in 1916, but the left half of the building (built as offices) only rose to the 5th level – the upper half was built (completing the original design) in 1997 as part of extensive refurbishment required after 20 years of abandonment.

In the old photograph below, taken shortly after it was built in 1913 we see the Commercial Travellers Association Hotel second from left.

Those details remind me of the sort of fascinating images you get on buildings of that era in Prague/Praha - and elsewhere in Europe.

Queen Victoria Women’s Centre
172-254 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne
Built in 1912

The block bounded by Swanston, Lonsdale, Russell and Little Lonsdale Streets once housed the Melbourne Hospital which had been established on the site in 1846. Just one of three pavilions of the innovative hospital complex remains today. The Edwardian Baroque complex was taken over in 1946 by the Queen Victoria Hospital, which was staffed and managed by women for women. The existing structure is the most elaborate bay of the hospital, designed as a series of pavilions with a long central corridor.

not much left of the hospital. its a nice building. there was a great chimney that stood on russell st for 80 years. it was stupidly demolished for BHP tower and rei tower.;(
