Erode Western Cauvery UA - Discussions-I.

Erode ring road project begins:

After years of wait Erode ring road has finally arrived, if one goes by what the Highways Department sources say.

The Department has completed the preliminary job of identifying the land to be acquired for the first phase of the project, which will connect Kokkarayanpettai in Namakkal district with Thindal in the district.

The road that will measure 14.1 km in length and will have a seven-metre width will pass through 12 villages, including Vendipalayam, Nanjai Uttukuli, Nanjai Lakkapuram, Punjai Lakkapuram and Vadamugam Vellode.

The land the Highways Department has identified measures around 75 acres, of which it has finalised measurements for 50 acres.

The task of demarcating the remaining land will be over in the weeks to come. Once the demarcation of the entire land required is over, the Department will submit a Land Plan Schedule to the Revenue Department, which will acquire and handover the land to the Highways Department.

For the land identification and acquisition process the Government has sanctioned Rs. 22 crore, say the Department sources.

The second phase of the project will connect Thindal with B.P. Agraharam on Bhavani Main Road. It will measure 9.5 km. The sources say the Department, though plans to lay road with only seven-metre width, is actually acquiring 30 metres keeping in mind expansion in future.

The ring road, as and when it becomes a reality, is expected to divert 2,200 buses and lorries from Erode city roads. The State Government had approved of the project during the 2006-07 Financial Year.

Contestants in the last election have promised lot of things for Erode.

How many will be fulfilled is any body' guess?

http://www.thehindu.com/2009/04/28/s...2852000300.htm

ERODE: Candidates contesting in Erode Parliamentary constituency came together at the platform provided by the Federation of All Trade and Industry Associations of Erode District here on Monday to discuss issues in the constituency.

The Federation, prior to the contestants’ speech, passed a resolution calling for the implementation of what it called the major issues of the constituency.

It asked for the setting up of a turmeric-based paint manufacturing industry in Erode, an industry to manufacture oleoresin, a special agriculture economic zone in Gobichettipalayam and Modakurichi, a cold storage facility for banana in Gobichettipalayam, a tourist centre in Thalavady hills and cold storage facility in farmers’ markets.

Under infrastructure development, the traders’ body asked the candidates to ensure construction of a bypass around Erode city, construction of a road over bridge at Panneer Selvam Park junction, construction of an 80-foot road, off Brough Road, another bridge across River Cauvery, turmeric market complex, a hi-tech textile park in Erode, setting up common effluent treatment plants to solve pollution problem among others.

The Federation also asked for a trade centre, shifting of taluk-district police office complex outside Erode, a TIDEL park in Perundurai, rail link between Palani and Chamaraja Nagar and electric train service between Coimbatore and Salem.
Candidates who spoke at the event promised to much more than the Federation asked for.

R.M. Palanisamy, representing Congress candidate E.V.K.S. Elangovan, said as zero discharge of effluents was not possible, Mr. Elangovan, if elected, would work to sea discharge effluents and that the scheme had already made some headway.

He also reminded the participants about Mr. Elangovan’s contribution in bringing the Erode Mega Cluster project, for which the Government of India had sanctioned Rs. 70 crore in subsidy.

MDMK candidate A. Ganesamoorthy said he would not say that all the resolutions would be implemented but conceded that all the demands put forth was justified. He promised to get River Cauvery cleaned to meet the drinking water needs of the district and also highlighted his party’s demand for integration of rivers. Mr. Ganesamoorthy also promised to get Erode declared an organic farming district.

BJP candidate N.P. Palanisamy said he would work to make Erode traffic- and pollution-free.

Farmers demand turmeric complex
Staff Reporter

ERODE: Farmers affiliated to the Kalingarayan Pasana Sabai have asked the State Government and district administration to find an early solution to the turmeric complex imbroglio.

A dream
In a release, after a monthly meeting, the farmers have said that after allotting 52 acres, releasing fund and calling for tender in 2007, nothing much has happened on the turmeric complex project, a dream for Erode residents.
Suggesting that Kodumudi in Erode is where turmeric is more famous, the farmers have asked the administration to find land there and move the project from Villarasampatti, Erode.

Minimum support price
They have also asked for a minimum support price of Rs. 3,000 a tonne of sugarcane and abolishment of contract farming of sugarcane, as it is biased in favour of sugar mills.

Demand
Their other demand is early implementation of the project to sea discharge effluents.
The association president V.M. Velayudham and others participated in the meeting.

Science exhibition gets under way in Erode
Staff Reporter

Little talents: Chief Education Officer Pon. Kumar looks at exhibits at the two-day 19th district-level Jawaharlal Nehru Science Exhibition, which got underway at Sengunthar Boys Higher Secondary School, Erode, on Monday.
ERODE: Nineteenth Jawaharlal Nehru Science Exhibition got underway in the district on Monday. The two-day annual academic event, organised for school students by the School Education Department at the Sengunthar Boys’ Higher Secondary School, provided the perfect platform for students from Standards VI, VII, VIII, IX, X and Plus-One and Plus-Two to showcase their talents.

Under the theme ‘Science, Technology and Society’, the students drawn from schools in obichettipalayam and Erode education districts had to put up exhibits under six topics: climate change causes and consequences, green energy, biology in human welfare, information and communication technology, mathematics in daily life and science and technology in games and sports.
Students drawn from 134 schools put up 280 exhibits in rooms that were named after well-known foreign and Indian scientists.

On biology in human life students of Govindapuram school and Bharathi Kalvi Nilayam, Nasiyanur came up with ways to naturally control pests in farms.
While the former advocated use of predator pests and insects to control harmful insects, the latter came up with pest traps to be used to trap nocturnal insects.

M. Ranjitha of Government Higher Secondary School, Mugasi Anumanpalli, explained various insect traps and how they ought to be used.
A good number of exhibits under the topic touched on agriculture and ways to help farmers. Students, particularly those from Government schools, came up with exhibits that though simple were conceptually sound.

Students of Government Higher Secondary School, Kumilankuttai, came up with a simple electronic device to detect the presence of mobile phones.
“The device, also battery operated, helps a teacher identify mobile phones in classrooms by buzzing and turning on the LED as and when mobile phone receives a message or call,” explained V. Parthiban of Plus-One.

Electricity generation from vegetables, emission of green house gases, damage to ozone layer, etc. were some of the most common exhibits.
Under ’science and technology in use of games and sports’ the exhibits, mostly from matriculation school students, was pedestrian.
One exhibit was on the use of video replay and hawk eye in decision making in cricket. Another was on marking in fencing.

Exhibits put up under ‘mathematical in daily life’ was good. Many students, using simple techniques, involved the visitors in various games, which remained one of one’s school days. At the end of the two-day exhibition, the School Education Department will award prizes to top three exhibits under each category. The prizes will also be divided class-wise. Students of Standards VI to VIII will form the first category followed by those from Standard IX and X and students from higher secondary will come under the third. Members of Tamil Nadu Science Forum, drawn from arts and science colleges in the region, have been asked to evaluate the exhibits for selecting the best.

Govt need to resolve Infrstructure disparity within TN says V Neethi Mohan, President of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce & Industry (TNCCI)

Quote:
All the infrastructure development work is heavily concentrated within a radius 100 kilometers around Chennai besides the traditional hub of Tirupur, Erode and Coimbatore doing well. But industry and region south of Madurai till Kanyakumari have been neglected.
Ref: Express Buzz

Anyone from south can comment on this, whether disparity is true??

It is not infrstructure development but industrial and economic development around CBE,Tirupur and Erode.

No doubt per capita income & expenditure in the western TN is higher other than Chennai.

We find many branded show rooms like Chennai silks, Kumaran silks, Alukkas,Malabar gold etc are there in Erode,Tirupur etc whereas bigger towns in population like Vellore,Cuddalore etc do not have. These towns were district HQs much earlier than Erode and Tirupur

Coconut shell powdering units mushroom in Erode
Staff Reporter

More entrepreneurs show interest in setting up the unit
— PHOTO:M.GOVARTHAN

In demand: A worker at the coconut shell powder manufacturing unit in Erode.

ERODE: Coconut shell powdering units are mushrooming in the district, thanks to a good market and Government support.
In the recent past three units have come up with Government support by way of subsidy. District Industries Centre (DIC) General Manager R. Ekambaram says Government has granted subsidy to three units, all of which have received the subsidy under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Policy.

The first industry received 15 per cent of Rs. 25 lakh, the cost of machinery, as subsidy under the micro industries scheme. The second, run by a woman, received 15 per cent of Rs. 50 lakh, the cost of machinery, as subsidy and an additional five percent towards promoting women entrepreneurship.
The third industry too has become eligible for such a subsidy and has been granted one but the cheque is yet to be disbursed.

Mr. Ekambaram says all three units availed of the Government grant for expansion that is all have set up second units.

The units buy coconut shells, available in plenty in the district, powder and send them to units that manufacture brake shoe, clutch plate, plywood, moulding workshops, and industries that manufacture mosquito coil.
R. Selvaraj of Agavi Agro Products, Kangayam, says his unit has the capacity to powder 250 kg of shells an hour. He gets 90 per cent of the quantity of shells as powder. The rest is waste.

The powder is then sent to Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Chennai and a few other districts in the State.

He says there is a market for coconut shell powder but it has become competitive given the increase in the number of units.

The units buy coconut shells around Rs. 4,000 a kg, which varies depending on the availability. At present it is costly because farmers are not harvesting coconut as it is not profitable to do so.

The powder is sold between Rs. 7.25 and Rs. 7.50 a kg, depending on the quality. DIC GM Mr. Ekambaram says more entrepreneurs have evinced interest in setting up coconut shell manufacturing units and that his office is scrutinising the applications.
