Where is the actual photo located? Try uploading it to imageshack and posting the last link it gives you.

Good grief, Bee Gee. That picture certainly shows the size of that wee beastie. Thanks for posting.

A few from what II took last Saturday, when the yacht race was coming in. The yachts seem so tiny compared to that beast at the CLF.

So are the yachts shown in the pictures from the South Docks?

Or do they tie-up or haul out some place else?

Those yachts were from the 'round the world clipper race.

She's lagging behind a bit...... I think she was meant to be the backup ship to Iron Duke, which has just anchored in Cayman......

Bloody hell, lock up the liquor cabinet and daughters, Willie's in town.

Ah, scratch that.... RFA BayLeaf has the honour of carrying the extra gin.....

Yesterday I was down in Southampton, and took the Ferry across to the Isle of Wight. The Queen Mary II was in dock. During the ferry trip back to the mainland, it was sailing out.

Two things struck me about this.

First, Southampton provided no sense of spectacle. The ship was just sat there on a strip of dock at a right angle to the land, with no backdrop. Southampton offers no skyline and no real waterfront of any description.

Second, nobody seemed that interested. The ship was there, but there were no spectators. Even when it was departing, aside from a few elderly people, those on the returning ferry seemed nonplussed, uninterested by the giant passing by.

The waters around Southampton on that average day did seem moderately busier than the Mersey on an average day, and the working docks there appeared far more extensive than Liverpool's remaining ones. Rows of huge cranes still in use. It was more impressive than Seaforth by some margin.

Perhaps that has much to do with the relative lack of excitement regarding ships.

But I'd suggest that equally significant is the obvious fact that Liverpool loves its ships. A sense of nostalgia, plus a new feeling of getting something back, probably both play a part, although my father tells me how big ships always got a big crowd in Liverpool, even when they were more commonplace. So I'd put forward the possibility that the crowds who turn out to see visiting ships demonstrate that culturally, after all these years, there is still something running through the veins of the average Liverpudlian that may not be there regarding residents of Southampton.

All of this is clearly offers no economic case for basing such a ship in Liverpool rather than Southampton. They obviously have their reasons. What is clear is that Liverpool would be a far more welcoming, appreciate host and provide a tangible sense of grandiosity, excitement and public event for the ships activities.

Simple really! One extra tide over that of the Mersey and no locking into an enclosed dock system and depending on a high tide twice a day and, most of all, proximity to London.

Is there going to be a visitor to the CLF this Saturday? (26th July). I've a friend down here who is going to visit Liverpool for the first time whilst on his way to Scotland. It would add to that vital first impression if something impressive has sailed in.
