Are there any possible plans for an exterior re-clad of the Arndale tower considering it's one of the tallest towers we have in Manchester and is of a fairly dispiriting and dated mustard complexion. I've read other negative comments about the unsightly exterior of the Arndale tower so I know I'm not the only one whose noticed. A petition maybe that will gain the attention of MCC? It kind of worked with Piccadilly gardens.....kind of.

Metrolink’s second city crossing to open this month

Services will begin operating on the Second City Crossing (2CC) on Sunday 26th February, allowing much more operational flexibility across the network - not to mention a boost to capacity.

2CC marks the final jigsaw in Metrolink's £1.5bn Phase 3 "Big Bang" expansion, which has seen the network treble in size, and when the Trafford Park line opens in 2020 there will be over 100 stations on the network.

The capacity increase will allow a doubling of frequency on some lines, from 5tph to 10tph.

Plans in for next stage of £70m Altair

15 Feb 2017, 16:10

A planning application has been submitted by Nikal for the second stage of development at the £70m Altair site in Altrincham.

The first phase of Altair was granted planning permission by Trafford Council last year, with Eric Wright starting on site with the construction of 59 apartments and ground floor leisure units. The scheme is due for completion in December 2017.

The planning application for the second stage is proposing four buildings made up of 91 apartments, retail units, offices, basement car park for 200 cars and associated plantrooms.

Stephenson Studio is the architect; the planner is HOW.

We've had a little surprise today on the Manchester forum.

It appears that Tower 2 (50 floors, 158m) is now under construction.

Photos by Toetallix showed a concrete base in place, with a core taking shape.

At the far end of the site:-

Meanwhile, at Tower 1 (64 floors, 200.5m), the core is roughly one floor off ground level (to the right of this photo)

And lastly, at Tower 4 (44 floors, 140m), the core is at two floors above ground level:

I love how we had a 158m skyscraper under construction without even realising it

The Big Nine | GVA

GVA have released their "Big Nine" office report, which shows that in Q4 2016 Manchester reported the highest office take up figures in 7 years.

  • Out of nine regional cities surveyed, Manchester accounted for a third of office take up in both the city centre and out-of-town markets.

  • The biggest deal in Q4 2016 was 165,000sqft to Swinton Insurance who will be taking the whole of the newly-completed 101 Embankment for their new headquarters, however the majority of take-up was dominated by deals under 5,000sqft, which GVA says represents the resilience and variety of the Manchester office market.

  • Manchester smashed its 5-year quarterly take up average of 280,000sqft to attain a figure of 621,000sqft in Q4 2016 in the City.

  • Headline office rents in central Manchester have risen once again this quarter, and now stand at £34 per sqft.

  • Peripheral office districts such as Salford Quays, Old Trafford and parts of South Manchester have rents nearer towards the mid-£20s region and so these areas are starting to see a lot of 'overspill' take-up from businesses that can't afford to be in the City.

  • Office take up for central Manchester for the whole of 2016 totalled 1,307,000sqft. According to my Development Update, there is currently just over 1m sqft of office space under construction in the City Zone, and nearly 1.4m sqft under construction across central Manchester. In other words, the city is running out of space and drastically needs to get more office space delivered!

Map showing how Manchester compares to other UK regional cities for office take-up, (GVA, 2017)

Great updates. So, it's official now I guess, Manchester has more tower above 100 m U/C than Paris. That's amazing.

Yes, sure http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...93&postcount=8

Paris only has 4 towers U/C and whole France 6 in total.

Manchester now has 6 alone.

Not saying much but not sure how they are trying to lure business away from London they should try Manchester first

Same applies to Germany too.

The consultation was for two sites: one in Ancoats on Bengal Street, and one in the Northern Quarter on Spear Street.

I have to say, I really like both proposals. They have lovely windows, and look like really nice brickwork. I think they are very smart. Below, I've set out the photos of the Ancoats one. I'll post the NQ one to the NQ thread.

And.

The eighteen month old pic. from VDB is really interesting. Was this taken just before the Judicial Review, what's happened to Mark Whitby?
