So Dhanmondi area residents are deprived of decent restaurants? Will give BBQ Tonite a try if I can make others in my party agree. Thanks.

For the love of Cup Cakes

by Ayesha Binte Towhid

Although the word, cup cake, gives us the idea of a cake baked in small cups, culinary artists today have gone way ahead of the literally term and brought a whole new trend in the baking scene. The cake is their canvas and wide array of décor is their colour and the frostings their palate.
Be it a bird’s nest or vintage roses, entire flower garden or your favourite Disney character these artists can make anything you want in those small delicate cakes. Recently many home cooks have started their own cupcake bakery and in no time it has become a favourite of the town. This week Trends brings you three such popular cupcake shops that have excelled in terms of taste, quality and design.

The Flourist:
After finishing her Diploma in Patisserie from Le Cordon Bleu, London, Saria Tasneem Ahmed flew back to Bangladesh and started her blog ‘The Flourist’. After being very successful in it, people around pushed her to open a cake shop and from there the journey of an online cake/bakery shop The Flourist started. Talking about the inspiration behind starting a bakery, the head chef Saria says, ‘I have an infamous sweet tooth and patisserie seemed the natural choice when enrolling into culinary school. I danced a bit with cuisine but my heart has always been a pastry. And a look at the global cake trends reveals that miniatures such as cupcakes have become just as important as cakes themselves.’
When asked about the specialty of her products, their cupcakes are big on flavour – they try and pack in as much flavour as possible to create a ball of cupcake-fury. Right now the online shop is offering nineteen different flavours but The Flourist is continually updating and reworking their flavour Chart. Besides sporting popular flavours in their menus, they carry out experiments by introducing unusual ones in the hopes of creating new family favourites.
When it comes to price, each cupcake cost between Tk 135 – Tk 150 depending on the order.
Going through the Facebook page of The Flourist, one will find it difficult to choose what to order because every photo looks delicious. But the chef has made it easier for the readers by recommending few ‘must-try’ items which includes Nutella, Oreo Black Opera, Salted Caramel and Red Velvet. If one is looking for something more different then he should try Carrot Top, Whipped Coconut cake or Banoffee.
Apart from the regular offering, The Flourist comes up with unique offers allowing their customers to celebrate special occasion with their lovely cupcakes. Special gift box of six cupcakes at Tk 900 will be available from the June 7 to present Fathers with their yummy and scrumptious cupcakes on Father’s Day!
To order: Orders of a minimum dozen cupcakes can be placed via text/call/email 2-5 days prior to the delivery depending on the size of the orders. The payment is accepted on delivery.

Puran Dacca at Banani

Downtown Dhaka, more popularly and commonly known as Old Dhaka/ Purana Dacca is famed for many reasons. The lifestyle, the treats and tastes, the traditions and rituals- these distinctive social features are pronouncedly different in that part, from the rest of the city. Apart from the culture and social norms which are pretty festive and colourful- the other prime feature that gives Old Dacca a separate entity is its food.
Even as of today, food from Old Dacca makes the taste buds active - the food is so differently delicious! To keep the trend going in the upscale suburbs of north Dhaka, a group of young entrepreneurs recently opened a restaurant in Banani. The place is very aptly named Purana Dacca Restaurant. To retain the essence of Old Dacca very much in tact, the management did not even use the new name of the capital: Dhaka. As Dhaka was Dacca earlier, and the place is all about food from the old part and old days of the city- That is why the name Purana Dacca Restaurant.
Food here, like the downtown, is all about biryani, tehari, jhal firazee, dopiaza, kebabs and tandooris. To carry on the legacy of the typical Old Dhaka food, the management has put in a lot of efforts, in term of culinary expertise.
The menu is quite full and rich with a variety of pulao, naan, biryani and paratha. Meat is a must in the cuisine, be it beef, mutton or chicken. So there is quite a variety to choose from.
There is the all-time favourite Mezban Gosh and Kala Gosh (both of which are Chittagong specialties), Mutton Roganjosh, Murg Mussallam, Beef TawaKabab- to name a few of their popular dishes. The Paach Mishali segment in the menu offers a number of bhaji /bharta/daal- regular features in the local meal. Chaap, a meat preparation akin to steaks, has recently been introduced. Another recent inclusion is their set menu.
The beverages have, among others common drinks, lassi, zeera pani, zafrani shorbot etc. For those who would still like a touch of the West, there is smoked chicken sandwich, couple with smoothies, shakes and frappes.
Falooda and Kulfi are an integral part of the downtown food. So, without these, the menu here would be incomplete. Thus, these very proudly adown the menu.
Purana Dacca Restaurant opened this March. An endeavour of a group of young minds, who wants to spread the legacy off Old Dhaka and keep it alive, it surely is a bold and bright step. Nestled at a quit corner at Banani (Rd. 13A, Block-C at the corner of the playground), this restaurant is ideal for a family meal or a friendly hangout. It is open from 12noon till midnight. A cosy dine out sitting approximately 60, the restaurant plans to add in more Puran Dacca things, in terms of food and other relevant features in the days to come.
