Build a station box under the airport capable of 3 lines, Sydney trains, metro and HSR. You don't have to build the lines themselves until they are needed.

Can someone explain WHY the proposals for Badgers Rail, especially Leppo, don't foreshadow building a giant park and ride near the airport so that the line is not just for the airport passengers (who might be a little bit thin on the ground on opening day) but also for commuters (who will NOT be thin on the ground during peaks).

Probably for the same reason that Sydney Airport doesn't have a large multi-storey free car park

Because park-and-rides are a shit use of land, a shit use of budget and provide only a trickle of additional passengers.

For example, this giant beast would fill not much more than one train per day, and cost $36m ignoring land costs. (1,500 spaces, assuming 1 passenger per space per day)

Prime land next to a station should be kept for something more useful.

I agree completely, but as devil's advocate here for a minute, you could also say that 1500 vehicles is 75% of the capacity of a motorway lane during the busiest hour. Throw in a few of these along a line and you can make a real difference to traffic (if the alternative is driving all the way).

What that really goes to highlight is the inefficiency of motorways vs railways for the single person commuter task!

I can see park and rides having a place in suburbia but why not build on top of them? They take up prime locations by railway stations and the air rights should be maximised. Also, I think that you should use your opal card to access them, charging a nominal fee.

Altho most park and rides fill up way before the busiest hour of morning peak

I'd rather see those parking spaces time limited so they can be used to support the businesses around the station.

Whilst the North/South rail link makes sense in the Airport's initial years, eventually a connection to Parramatta will need to be established if they expect it to grow to this
