Runway closures in 2013 to mean delays at SFO

By Joshua Melvin jmelvin@bayareanewsgroup.com

Updated: 01/04/2013 06:57:29 AM PST

Even on sunny days travelers flying to and from San Francisco International Airport may see extra delays in 2013.

That's because the airport will be temporarily shutting down some runways in January, April and June as part of a multiyear construction project. Travelers on shorter, West Coast flights could see their departures pushed back by 30-45 minutes, airport spokesman Doug Yakel said.

The delays are due to a federally required lengthening of runways that is intended to make air travel safer. In addition to tacking tarmac on to the existing runways, work crews will have to move landing lights and other infrastructure. The federally funded work is expected to wrap up by the fall of 2015, Yakel said.

Runway 28L is slated to be closed Jan. 11-14, Jan. 18-21, Jan. 25-28 and June 25-26. Runway 28R is scheduled to close April 5-8, April 12-15, April 19-22, April 26-29 and June 27-28.

SamTrans riders can expect scheduling changes starting Sunday
By: Will Reisman | 01/09/13 11:14 PM
SF Examiner Staff Writer

SamTrans will be changing the scheduling times on
nearly 40 percent of its bus lines this weekend to improve service.

Every four months, the San Mateo County transit agency adjusts bus schedules to address issues with on-time performance and to increase efficiency, according to spokeswoman Christine Dunn. During the latest adjustment, SamTrans reviewed its lower-performing lines and determined how their schedules could be tweaked to better meet the needs of riders, she said.

“The problems are usually pretty specific — like a bus being consistently late at one stop, or not getting certain students to school on time,” Dunn said. “We take a look at our scheduling and see how we can make the appropriate changes.”

Perhaps I will consider creating a brand new thread dedicated to the Peninsula and the South Bay, and we can reallocate this thread to everything in general for transit. How's that?

We already have a VTA thread and I don't think Samtrans will keep a peninsula thread alive. This thread will do for now.

Sounds good. How about an East Bay Transit thread? There are quite a bunch of transit agencies in the East Bay...

What's weird is that I don't find a lot of news about AC Transit and it's one of the biggest transit agencies in the Bay Area. BART already has a thread so I also don't think an East Bay thread is needed at the moment.

AC Transit has its own set of news, but it comes like once in a while or a blue moon. Perhaps its service remains normal as of the moment, and there isn't much any changes in routes at the moment to report.

New San Jose Airport passenger lounge aims to provide smoother takeoffs for travelers

SAN JOSE -- They call it "The Club," an enclave of civility at Mineta San Jose International Airport that aims to take the turbulence out of air travel.

This respite from the frequent indignities of modern air travel -- its mushroom-colored leather seats are cushy, the shower is equipped with designer soaps, the bar is well-stocked with spirits and local beers -- opens Thursday.

The lounge is located on the third-floor in Terminal A across from Gate 15 and was built specifically to meet the demands of All Nippon Airways, which begins its five-day-a-week Dreamliner 787 San Jose-Tokyo flight on Friday. But The Club also is available to all San Jose International travelers who buy a $35 day pass or are members of Priority Pass, which provides worldwide lounge access for an annual fee. Other airlines may also add access to the lounge as part of premium-class tickets in the future.
