Good to hear. We do have one of the lowest crime rates of any major U.S. city.

Best we keep it up.

For violent crime (rapes, murders, etc.), yes, we're one of the lowest in the country. But as far as theft goes (burglary, auto, larceny), we're quite a bit higher than average.

Good place to check out how we compare:

don't the new census estimates come out this month, i can never remember if it's april or june. i'd like to see us get to 588,000 cuz that'd mean our density reached 7,000 per square mile. it sure does feel like growth has really picked up the last couple years

Technically it was only 1 murder; the other was a suicide.

i'm pretty sure there were a couple in march. that 74 year old guy stabbed his 71 year old cousin. and then there was one towards the end. it's weird i've read about a ton of shootings but not many of em are dieing, so that's deffinitely good. a sign that medicines getting a lot better, and also that some people are getting lucky

Actually, aggrivated assaults are way down so far this year, too (I assume those include shootings).

Through the end of Feb. last year, there were 345 aggrivated assaults:
http://www.seattle.gov/police/crime/...70/200602y.htm

So far this year there's only been 282 for the same time period:
http://www.seattle.gov/police/crime/...70/200702y.htm

Dunno about actual "shootings" though, they don't seperate those out.

This was on today's news. I don't know how many murders total so far from Jan to June 2007.

SEATTLE- Two people were shot in downtown Seattle at 211 Pine Street just before 11 p.m. on Friday, according to police.

Police said a couple was walking down Pine Street when a man pulled up in a silver Kia around 10:45. The man got out of the car and made an offensive remark towards the woman, prompting a heated verbal argument between the three, who are all said to be in their mid-20s.

"Her male partner started to step toward the suspect in the car. The suspect popped the trunk of the car, pulled out a rifle and fired multiple rounds," said Capt. Richard Belshay.

The victim died at the scene. His name has not been released. The woman was not injured. It is not known whether the couple knew the gunman.

A passerby, who was not involved in the argument, was also shot in the leg by the gunman, police said.

"He heard the shooting and began running down 2nd Avenue southbound, and he got down to Pike Street and realized he had been shot in the leg," Belshay said.

The victim has been transported to Harborview Medical Center and is expected to recover.

After firing several rounds, police said the gunman took off through the rally between 2nd Avenue and 3rd Avenue. Police searched the area and found the gunman hiding in a dumpster near Virginia Street with his rifle. He has been taken into custody. His name has not been released.

Police are still questioning several witnesses.

The latest stats they list on the Seattle PD website only go up to the end of April. Total murders to that point: 6

per 100,000, thats about 1.05 murders
that projects to 18.25 murders for the year
projected per 100,000, thats about 3.17

tho Im sure that shooting will bump up the average a bit.

I've been updating the corresponding thread in SSP regularly, excepting the one last night. Here's the ones I've made note of since the end of April.

5/2
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/...tabbing03.html

5/19
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/htm...1_dige19m.html

5/23
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/316868_shot24.html

2 on 6/11
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/...omicide11.html

Plus sequoias one above.

So, if I've caught them all, that would be 12 so far this year. That would put us on the track for another 20-something murders for the year.

Ahh, around 12 so far. Not too bad for half of the year, I guess.

that would be 24 for the year, about 4.2 /100,000. Not as low as some Canadian cities or European cities, but still pretty damn good for a city our size.
