Zaha Hadid's Swooping Spaceship For The High Line, Unveiled!

July 15, 2013

Zaha Hadid may have lost out on the competition to design the High Line, but now the Iraq-British starchitect is back in the 'hood with a design for her very first New York City building. In fact, this time around, she beat out big names including Norman Foster—to whom she lost a competition to build an office tower at 425 Park Avenue—to get the gig. Hadid is known for dreaming up swooping, curving, space-age structures, and the 11-story condo building headed for 520 West 28th Street is no exception. Developed by Hudson Yards masterminds Related Companies, the site was actually quite limiting, according to New York Magazine's preview, which kept Hadid's grand swooshes in check. "You can't really go wild," she told NY Mag, yet it still "comes off like the delightful Earth home for the weary intergalactic superrich," with two wings of uneven heights, a chevron pattern on the exterior, rounded corners, and jutting-out terraces that make the facade excitingly far from uniform.

Within the 11 stories, Related says in a release issued this morning, will be "37 residences of up to 5,500 square feet, focusing on expansive, gracious layouts with 11-foot ceilings, thoughtful technological integration and state-of-the-art finishes and features.

-Even more than most buildings, this will live or die based on the quality of the materials.

-I worry about the buildings along the highline becoming an unbroken mass of starchictecture. The whole point of the highline is that is like walking in a garden above the city. That should include old and working class buildings.

Generally speaking the buildings around the high line are mostly low rise but sometimes the buildings around it do take away the experience of actually enjoying the views the high line offers.

But this building is amazing! The west side is getting all these amazing projects, big or small

Behold, The First Look Inside Zaha Hadid's High Line Condos

Zaha Hadid's swooping, spaceship-like condo building along the High Line is just about the most exciting of the many buildings on the rise in West Chelsea and the dozens of projects designed by starchitects in New York City. Mind-boggling renderings of the wavy exterior? Check. Some voluptuous floorplans, plus pricing? Check. Here now, the first look inside the West 28th Street condos, with two unreleased renderings snagged by a tipster. Above, a kitchen at 520 West 28th Street, with a central island that looks just about as undulating as you'd imagine. Plus, "the downlights integrated in the ceiling panels follow the geometry created by the architecture," and there's a geometrically incomprehensible faucet, because, you know, Zaha!

Prices will start at just under $5 million to $35 million for a duplex.
