Bad news about Hobbs, particularly as they are not a struggling chain, quite the opposite in fact. Good that Joules are relocating but another sign of decline on Bridlesmith gate sadly. Noticed also that Kurt Geiger next door has been downgraded to a factory outlet... why are these staple middle class stores closing/ downgrading? Exchange arcade seems below 50% let at the moment too...

Looks like a couple more closures in the Bridlesmith gate area - both the Pretty Green and small Paul Smith (opposite Reiss) stores are up for let on the FHP website.

Not great at the moment, is it? Is it a Nottingham specific issue though, or symptoms of a wider economic malaise? Wages aren't rising ahead of the cost of living, household spending ratios are at an all-time low. More and more cars being leased, which is a ticking time bomb, and leaves less money for other discretionary purchasing. Currency has dropped in value making imports more expensive, including food. Lots going on behind the scenes here.

Obviously the retail landscape is changing, and has been for years, but it's disappointing to lose two higher end fashion shops (although not heard anything about the flagship PS shop shutting).

In better news, new bar for Friar Lane in a former retail unit:

And another bar called Cottonmouth is coming to 25 Goose Gate, formerly Curtis and York hairdressers I think

Cost of going out and having drinks in a bar are eye wateringly expensive, yet we seem to be able to keep new bars open and clothes shops seem to close

How about Nottingham then: anywhere suitable for Mike Ashley's and Philip Day's respective department stores to go? Broadmarsh ought to be snapping both up as anchors.
