Must still be bitter, because this place makes Safeco look like a rusty old erector set

Marlins close off upper deck for 6 games next week

Unprecedented for a 2nd year ballpark. MLB goes out of its way to prevent a guy like Cuban from owning a team, and at the same time tolerates garbage like Loria.

It's not a bad idea though. Should improve the image of Marlins attendance on TV.

So that means that the fans can still pay upper deck prices for those lower bowl seats, right? Right? :p

Maybe they can kick the Marlins out, and re-work it to a football stadium for the Dolphins. Solves the Dolphins stadium problems, eliminates the headache known as the Marlins.

Yeah probably not a good idea.

However, now I'm intrigued as to how they would do it if they did.

As shown from the previous page you can obviously fit a football field in there comfortably and even have seating at both end zones. Albeit, it's far from graceful or pretty. The catch, of course, is the one sideline that ends up angling further away from the field. This would have to be reconfigured.

Possible? Absolutely. Could it be done nicely? I'm guessing you could squeeze out a unique and highly functional 40-45k football stadium if the redone sideline doesn't feature too much premium seating. The catch is the structure as a whole is tightly configured, and not ideally so for further expansion in the directions most desired: Trying to punch outward in the direction where you'd want to introduce new stands you'd end up needing to close off roads!

Perhaps you could reconfigure it to a cozy 45k+ stadium for the Hurricanes, which would be poetic. But the cost to do so would be insane.

Here's a good read from Grantland about the crappiness of attending a game at Marlins Park.

That was a depressing and fascinating read. Kind of reminds me of Candlestick Park in the mid 1970s. The nine games against the Dodgers each year would average maybe 30,000. The remaining 72 games might average 4,000. Weekday day games might draw 1,500.

At least they are somehow outdrawing the Mariners and Orioles despite having an owner who seems to be actually trying to lose games and alienate fans.

Hmm. According to ESPN the only teams below Miami are Tampa and Cleveland. Apart from last year's "New home" experience the team has consistently finished in the bottom 3 for attendance for several years now.

Doesn't change that the owner is the issue, though.

The park itself is great. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the park. The fact that the owner sucks and needs to go, doesn't change the fact that the team needed a new stadium. Marlins Park will be a big asset to Miami as soon as Loria is gone.

Loria will like the extra $$$$ that the stadium will net him once he decides to sell, as well.
